Judging. Matt 7:1-5. Introduction. This is one of the most misinterpreted, misapplied, and misused Bible verses. When people want to justify and insulate themselves from criticism and accountability. Jesus Christ is the Judge of all men.

  1. Judging Matt 7:1-5

Introduction • This is one of the most misinterpreted, misapplied, and misused Bible verses. • When people want to justify and insulate themselves from criticism and accountability. • Jesus Christ is the Judge of all men. • Christ discriminates between right and wrong, sin and evil. • John 5:22, 27; Acts 10:42; Acts 17:30-31; II Cor 5:10; Rev 16:7 • Equally true is the Christ is a merciful judge. • Anyone who desires mercy shall receive it. • John 6:37 • Jesus was a friend to those who the world despised and rejected. • Matt 11:19 • To understand this passage we must understand who Jesus is and what he expects from us. • Jesus is the ultimate judge and it is wrong for us to overlook and tolerate sin! • It would also be wrong for us to go to the other extreme and become judgmental people.

  3. Reciprocation v1-2 • The word translated judge means to separate and discriminate against (do it all the time). • It means to evaluate something on the basis of right and wrong. • Many people insist that no one has the right to judge things pertaining to morality. • When people are confronted with a particular practice or behavior they are quick to quote this verse. • Could you use this tactic when pulled over for a speeding ticket. • As a believer in God, Christ, H.S. and the Bible it is not my duty to create standards of right and wrong. • It is my duty to evaluate right and wrong based on the word of God. • Calling sin, SIN is only pointing to the judgment that has already been made by God. • John 7:24---I Thess 5:21 • Read Matt 7:15-20. • The church has a duty to discipline sin • Rom 6:17

  4. Reciprocation v1-2 • This is the reason why we are forbidden to judge. • The judgment here is not referring to righteous judgment but a judgment based on a personal preference rather that the word of God. • Ex: Waking up at a certain time. • A standard not based on the word of God but is used to evaluate and condemn. • Read James 2:1-4. • Jesus is not forbidding judgment based on rightly evaluating what a person does or says in comparison to the word of God. • Jesus is forbidding judging someone based upon a standard that is not according to the word of God. • The reason why we should not judge people by our own standard because we put ourselves in a position to be judged by others the same way. • Read Matt 7:12. • Also we must consider Jesus being our judge at the end of time. • How we treat others will affect our evaluation before God in this life and at the judgment. • James 2:13.

  5. Review v3 • Looking at others • To behold comes from the word that means to stare at, to observe with scrutiny. • Mote is a small piece of dry stubble, a blade of grass, a splinter, a speck of dust. • Jesus asks the question “why” • The question we have to ask ourselves is why do you look at others and point out faults. • Is it to help them or to bring them down? • Gal 6:1 • Looking at yourself • Beholding someone else and not considering yourself is wrong! • Beam is made from the same material as the mote(Rom 6:23). • A beam is a piece of wood used for building, a floor joist • The idea is that of a person trying to get a speck of saw dust out of someone else's eye and they have a 2x4 stuck in their own eye • We must look at ourselves before we begin to be a faultfinder of others • Does not rule our righteous judgment, but must not be a faultfinder only.

Reaction v4 • Helping others • How can a person help someone with their problem when they are guilty of the same thing in magnified form. • Before we can help others we must be on the right path. • Yes, we must help others, but we cannot influence others if we are doing right. • Helping yourself • Though we want to help everyone we must first make sure we are doing all we can do please God • I Tim 4:16 • We must take care of self before we can take care of others! • Acts 2:40 • Two drowning men in the ocean cannot save one another. • It takes someone who is already in a state of safety to lend a helping hand.

  7. Rejection v5 • Hypocrite! • A person who has two faces. • That is who you are when you are guilty of the same thing that you are condemning someone else of doing. • Rom 2:1 • There is a divine order. • First take care of yourself so that you may see clearly. • A person living in sin cannot see clearly. • Pro 4:19 • Second try to help others. • You cannot help someone else (judge or evaluate someone else) when you are guilty of the same sin.

  8. Conclusion • Jesus does not condemn judging. • Jesus condemns judging someone according to your own standards and not the word of God. • We must make “righteous judgment.” • We must look at ourselves. • If we are guilty of something we have no right to condemn someone of it until we stop doing it ourselves. • Jesus is the ultimate judge. • He will judge the world according to righteousness Acts 17:31. • He will judge the world according to his word John 12:48. • Must be a Christian to be judged righteous.
