  2. What are Ethics? Take a moment to write down in your Do Now section what you think ethics are Where do you think are the sources for your ethics? Do you think that a person’s ethics can change?
  3. Defining Ethics What are Ethics? Ethics are the means for determining what a society’s values should be Morality involves the values that govern a society’s attitude towards right and wrong Why do people possess different morals and ethics?
  4. What are the ways in which Ethical decision are made? There are three main ways in which people make their ethical decisions. Feelings and Opinions The Greatest Good Principle The Golden Rule
  5. Feelings and Opinions Have you ever made a decision based on an incorrect opinion? Have you ever made a decision when you were angry? What were the results?
  6. Greatest Good Principle Defined: an action that creates the greatest good for the greatest number of people Can you think of an example of the greatest good principle? Do you think that this principle can be misapplied? Explain.
  7. The Golden Rule Defined: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. In other words, treat people the way you want to be treated. Empathy is the heart of the golden rule. Empathy is when you put yourself in someone else’s situation before making a decision.
  8. What are the ethical character traits that a person can possess? Come on up to the board and write down one ethical character trait The three main ethical character traits are: Honesty Justice Compassion Integrity
  9. The relationship between Ethics and the Law Ethics tell us what we ought to do The law tells us what we must do Do you think that ethics and law ever work together? Do you think ethics and the law conflict with each other?
  10. Ethics vs. Law cont’d People are imperfect. Because law is made by imperfect people, it is also imperfect. Legislators and judges bring their own personal sense of ethics and morality into the lawmaking and judicial process However, these variations create and enforce laws that incorporate imperfections
  11. Your Assignments Textbook chapter 1 Define all of the legal terms highlighted in yellow from pages 6-12 on a separate sheet in your legal terms section. Leave legal terms in your notebook Textbook Questions- Page 13 #1-7 and critical thinking question. Page 21 #1-5 This will be collected tomorrow end of class & graded
