  2. TODAY’S PATIENT SCHEDULE • 11:00: Noah • 11:20: Jacob • 11:40: Miriam

NOAH: Background(Gen 5-9) • Of Adam’s lineage through Seth: “made… in the likeness of God” (5:1); created and blessed by God • Great grandson of Enoch, “who walked with God (for 300 years); then he was no more, because God took him away” (5:23); • Grandson of Methusaleh, the oldest man who ever lived (969 years) • Son of Lamech (who lived 777 years); born when Lamech was 182 years old • Noah means “comforter”: “He will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our hands caused by the ground the Lord has cursed” (5:29)

NOAH:Calling • Three sons: • Shem (precursor of the Israelites and Arabs) • Japheth (precursor of the Indo-Europeans) • Ham (father of Canaan and precursor of the Africans) • He was “a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God” (6:9) in a corrupt era • When he was 600 years old, God called on him to build an ark and cover it with pitch; he “did all that the Lord commanded him” (7:5)

NOAH: Response(Gen 8:20-9:17) • After leaving the ark, Noah built an altar and sacrificed burnt offerings of animals and birds • God made “the covenant of the rainbow” with Noah by promising to never again destroy the world by flood • God told Noah to “be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth” and “everything that lives and moves will be food for you” (except meat with its lifeblood still in it)

  7. NOAH: Fall • “Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded to plant a vineyard. When he drank some of its wine, he became drunk and lay uncovered beside his tent.” (9:20-21) • Ham saw his father’s nakedness and notified Shem and Japheth, who covered their father • Upon awakening, Noah cursed Canaan, the son of Ham, and promised blessings to Shem and Japheth

  8. NOAH: Aftermath • “After the flood Noah lived 350 years. Altogether, Noah lived 950 years, and then he died” (9:28-29) • There is no mention of any of Noah’s accomplishments after the flood • His initial greatness was not reflected in how he finished his days

When will I wake up    so I can find another drink?”

  13. LESSONS FROM THE LIFE OF NOAH • The value of faithful obedience • “Don’t be drunk with wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the spirit.” (Eph. 5:18) • Be careful: one night of sin can wreak havoc upon a otherwise righteous life • Finish strong: don’t rest upon your laurels • Be a model for your children

JACOB: Background(Gen 25, 27-36, 38) • Son of Isaac and Rebekah and grandson of Abraham and Sarah • Younger, twin brother of Esau (“hairy”), also known as Edom (“red”) • Jacob means “he grasps the heel” or “he deceives” • Jacob was a quiet man, favored by Rebekah • Esau, the hunter, was favored by Isaac

JACOB: The Deceiver • Jacob steals Esau’s birthright for bread and red lentil stew (25:27-34) • Rebekah urges Jacob (“the deceiver”) to dress up as Esau and he obtains the fraudulent blessing of the firstborn from Isaac (27:6-29) • To escape the vengeful Esau, Jacob flees to his uncle Laban in Haran

JACOB MEETS GOD AT BETHEL(Gen 28:1-22) • At Bethel, Jacob dreams of a stairway to heaven and hears the Lord confirming His covenant with Abraham and his descendants • He prays, “If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear 21 so that I return safely to my father’s household, then the LORD[f] will be my God…”

THE DECEIVER IS DECEIVED(Gen 29-31) • In Haran, Jacob meets Rachel at a well; he promises her father Laban that he will work seven years for the right to marry her • On his wedding night, Laban deceives Jacob, giving him his eldest daughter, Leah, instead • Jacob then works another seven years for Rachel , followed by another six years in Laban’s service, during which he fathers 13 children and accumulates great wealth at Laban’s expense • Finally, Jacob flees suddenly and returns to Israel

JACOB MEETS GOD AT PENIEL(Gen 32:24-32) • After leaving Laban and before meeting Esau, Jacob wrestles an angel • The angel dislocates Jacob’s hip, but Jacob does not let go until he is blessed by the angel and given a new name: Israel • Jacob calls the place Peniel “because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared”

  21. OVERCOMING DISCOURAGEMENT AND ADVERSITY • God uses the hardships and setbacks of our life to comfort and strengthen us • “Our ways are not His ways” and our timing is not His timing • God ultimately rewards our faith in Him

  22. GOD’S PRESCRIPTION FOR DISCOURAGEMENT: Joy “We rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance, perseverance, character, and character hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit.” (Rom 5:2-5) “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: rejoice!” (Phil 4:4)

LESSONS FROM THE LIFE OF JACOB • We are the product of our ancestors; we carry their burdens and face their same issues • We are a “work in progress”: God is not finished with us yet • God wants us to persevere, to “keep our eyes on the prize” • God can speak to us and embrace us in our brokenness

  26. MIRIAM AND MOSES(Ex 2:1-10) • “ 7 Then his sister asked Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?” • 8 “Yes, go,” she answered. So the girl went and got the baby’s mother.”

  27. MIRIAM THE PROPHETESS(Ex 15:20-21) • “Then Miriam the prophetess, Aaron’s sister, took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women followed her, with timbrels and dancing. 21 Miriam sang to them: • “Sing to the LORD, for he is highly exalted. Both horse and driver  he has hurled into the sea.”

THE JEALOUSY OF MIRIAM(Num 12:1-6a) •  ”1 Miriam and Aaron began to talk against Moses because of his Cushite wife, for he had married a Cushite. 2“Has the LORD spoken only through Moses?” they asked. “Hasn’t he also spoken through us?” And the LORD heard this.  3 (Now Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.) • 4 At once the LORD said to Moses, Aaron and Miriam, “Come out to the tent of meeting, all three of you.” So the three of them went out. 5 Then the LORD came down in a pillar of cloud; he stood at the entrance to the tent and summoned Aaron and Miriam. When the two of them stepped forward, 6 he said, “Listen to my words:”

THE REBUKE OF MIRIAM(Num 12:6b-12) •    “When there is a prophet among you,    I, the LORD, reveal myself to them in visions,    I speak to them in dreams. 7 But this is not true of my servant Moses;    he is faithful in all my house. 8 With him I speak face to face,    clearly and not in riddles;    he sees the form of the LORD. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?”

  30. MIRIAM’s PUNISHMENT(Num 12:9-10) •  ”9 The anger of the LORD burned against them, and he left them. • 10 When the cloud lifted from above the tent, Miriam’s skin was leprous[a]—it became as white as snow.”

  31. DISEASE AND THE NATURE OF GOD • God intended us to be eternally healthy • Disease and death came through sin and disobedience • God’s very nature is healing: • Jehovah-Rapha (Exodus 15:26) • Jesus, the healer, is the very image of God (Hebrews 1:1-4;Colossians 1:15, 2:9)

  32. WHY ARE WE SICK? • The fallen creation (Luke 13:1-5) • Personal sin (Numbers 12:1-15) • Satan’s work (Mark 9:14-29) • To teach us perseverance (2 Cor 12:7-10) • To demonstrate God’s glory through healing (John 9:1-41; 11:1-44)

  34. LESSONS FROM THE LIFE OF MIRIAM • Each of us has been given gifts from God; employ the gifts you have and recognize the gifts you don’t have • Support other believers; we are all on the same team • Repentance leads to healing
