Exploring Tropical Rainforests: Biodiversity, Climate, and Conservation Efforts

Tropical rainforests, covering over 6% of the Earth's surface, boast immense biodiversity and produce 40% of the world’s oxygen. Characterized by tall trees and a humid climate, these ecosystems receive 50-260 inches of rainfall yearly. They feature two seasons—dry in summer and wet in winter—providing habitats for countless species. Despite their importance and complexity, rainforests face severe deforestation, with half of their area lost since 1990. Initiatives like nature walks and waterfall visits promote ecological tourism while raising awareness for conservation efforts.

  2. Tropical Rainforest Tropic Thunder Travel

  3. Features • Many, tall trees • Warm • 50-260 in rainfall each year • Covers > 6% of earth’s surface • Produces 40% of earth’s oxygen • The 3 largest rainforests: • Central-America (Amazon river basin) • African • Asian (Indo-Malaysian)

  4. Climate • The climate is very humid because of all the rainfall, which amounts to about 250 cm per year. • Has lots of rain because it is very hot and wet (warm air holds more water than cold air) • 50% precipitation comes from own evaporation

  5. Seasons:Only 2 seasons, no fall or spring • Summer: Dry season • Best time • Little rain, average is 80-90 degrees Fahrenheit • Winter: Wet season • Enjoyable if you like the rain! • Same temperature (on equator)

  6. The winter home for many migrating birds Home to many tribes that have survived successfully for thousands of years Source for medicinal plants Most complex interdependence of animals on Earth Help maintain weather and rain patterns Unique Features & Characteristics

  7. Plant Life • Very humid environment; trees have pores that give off water through transpiration • Large leaves to absorb sunlight • Many species of vines that make up 40% of canopy leaves • Strong biodiversity; no dominant species

  8. Animal Life • Many mammals and birds that adapt to tree life such as New World monkeys • Insects, such as Leafcutter ants, make up the largest group of animals • Heavy fruit diets • Bright colored species • Sharp patterned species

  9. Tourism Activities • Nature Walks • Waterfall Visits • River Boat Rafting

  10. Deforestation • Rainforests cover 6% of World • House over half the species • Since 1990 half of the Rainforests have been destroyed
