  1. Warm upTuesday, 12/17/13 Fahrenheit 451 follow up • Take out your SF story HW • I will circulate while you write the warm up. • Think about the imagined world that you are building. Consider the characters in your story. Describe an important character in your story. Consider and write about that character’s appearance, background, personality, interests, career, situation, and anything else that makes that character important. If you don’t have any characters yet, it’s time to make one up!

  2. Warm up Monday, 12/16/13 Fahrenheit 451 follow up • Take out your SF story HW • I will circulate while you write the warm up. • Think about the imagined world that you are building. Write a full, descriptive paragraph about that world. Use imagery that appeals to all, or most, of the five senses. Pay attention to everything about your imagined world that is different from our own world.

  3. Warm up Friday, 12/13/13 Fahrenheit 451 follow up • Take out your SF story HW • I will check for completion while you do the warm up. • Think about good short stories you have read, including Speculative Fiction stories. What makes a good story good? Develop the criteria for a good story.

  4. Warm up Wednesday, 12/11/13 Fahrenheit 451 • Take out your vocab HW (pp.57-59) • I will check for completion while you do the warm up. • Read the handout • Hand this in: respond in writing to the instructions at the bottom.

  5. Warm up Friday, 12/6/13 Fahrenheit 451, “Burning Bright.” • Set up the circle of desks. • Take out your five interpretive questions and your four elements analysis. I will check for completion while you do the warm up. • Read the paragraph that begins “There was a silly damn bird called a Phoenix…” (156). • Granger says that people are different than the Phoenix and will not do exactly the same things again because some of us remember what we did that caused us to burn ourselves up. What is the connection between memory and books, as explored in the novel? Explain.

  6. Warm up Wednesday, 12/4/13 Fahrenheit 451, “Burning Bright.” • Take out your vocabulary homework. I will check for completion while you do the warm up. • Read the hand out on symbolism and follow the directions. You may use your text and your notes on the novel. • We will share our work on the warm up soon.

  7. Warm up Tuesday, 12/3/13 Fahrenheit 451, “Burning Bright.” • It looks like emphasizing what ancient Greeks thought were the four elements is important in this section of the novel. Explain why. • We will continue short conferences to discuss your TKAM papers.

  9. Warm up Friday, 11/22/13 • Take out your 5 interpretive questions on Fahrenheit 451, “The Sieve and the Sand.” Choose your most interesting question and answer it, using your notes and evidence from the text, by 8:30. You will hand this paper in by the end of class.

  10. Warm up Thursday, 11/21/13 Consider Fahrenheit 451, “The Sieve and the Sand” pp. 67-106. Using your notes if you need to, define, contrast, and give examples of questions of fact, interpretation, and evaluation, writing example questions for Fahrenheit 451. (Hint: if you write a good interpretive question for Part 2, your HW is already started).

  11. Warm up Wednesday, 11/20/13 Consider Fahrenheit 451, “The Sieve and the Sand” pp. 67-106. Using evidence from text and your notes, describe how Montag behaves when the ladies visit, and try to explain why he does what he does.

  13. Warm up Thursday, 11/14/13 Consider Fahrenheit 451, “The Hearth and the Salamander” pp. 1-65. Using evidence from text and your notes, describe the society in which Montag lives. Compare and contrast this society to ours. Use correctly and underline at least five vocabulary words from Unit 2 in your description.

Using evidence from text and your notes, describe how Montag changes from the beginning of the section to the end of the section. How does his relationship with himself, his wife, and his attitude towards society change?

  15. Warm up 11/12/13 Consider Fahrenheit 451, “The Hearth and the Salamander” pp. 1-65, to hand in. Using evidence from text, describe Clarisse’s character, show how she is different from most people in her society, and explain how getting to know her and losing her affects Montag.

  17. Warm up 11/5 Take out your vocab HW (20 sentences that show you can use them correctly are due). I will check for completion while you write the following: Choose three of the least familiar Unit 1 vocabulary words and write a fragment of a science fiction story that uses the words AND shows that you know what they mean. Be sure to spell them correctly, and also use each word as the correct part of speech.

  18. Warm up 10/31 Take out your vocab HW (pp. 19-21 are due). I will check for completion while you write about the following: Choose three of the least familiar Unit 1 vocabulary words and write sentences (1, 2, or 3) that use the words AND show that you know what they mean, spell them correctly, and also use the words as the correct part of speech.
