  1. Thomas Sheridan Primary Text 1 A Course of Lectures on Elocution, 1762. - Argues that oral communication has qualities that written prose do not. Ex. “Your accent- the way you pronounce words- affects your perceived credibility.” Think: Country accent vs. Harvard( upper-class) accent 1719-1788 Primary Text 2 Lectures on The Art of Reading, 1775. Focused on how to read aloud effectively. (Again we see his focus on the canon of Delivery.) Sheridan is a Irish born actor, writer, and teacher whose life’s work was focused on the canon of delivery& Elocution (the art of speaking well.) Among the collection of books he had written throughout his life, part of them directly addressed issues of rhetoric, speech pattern, pronunciation, and rules associated with oration to a crowd or audience. During his lifetime, the Elocution Movement was taking place, which Sheridan played a major role in. This rhetorical movement set out to embrace the importance of delivery of speech and pronunciation within the education system. Along with Sheridan’s many contributions through texts, he also opened up his own academy which upheld his passion for the canon of delivery. How to show Pathos & Ethos Orally: Accent, Pronunciation, Tones, Pitch, Volume, Pauses, and Breath Sheridan vs. Austin Sheridan= Conversational/ Natural Austin= Precise/ Formal (choreographed) Keep In Mind: Classical Rhetoric focused onElocutio, or STYLE. Modern Rhetoric is associated with Elocution, or DELIVERY.
