  1. Reaction Amongst The Young Rebellion against elders/parents/old values Influence of music/pop culture Teenagers – new concept Influence of idols – E.G. Elvis Growth of Universities –student sit-ins A search for a new, more peaceful solution to problems – non-violence Hippies

  2. Reaction Amongst The Parents Mostly supported the war in the beginning (propaganda), but started to change their minds because of:* The media * Length of the war* Children being drafted* Influence of the young and their culture, and… Government action against the students – E.g. Kent State

  3. Reaction Amongst The Workers Many workers eventually felt a great deal of sympathy with the students and there were strikes in protest at the governments treatment of demonstrators.

  4. Reaction From The Returning Soldiers These accounts and actions – from the men who had gone to Vietnam to fight for justice, peace and freedom – affected the views of many American citizens of all ages and walks of life! Why had these men had to suffer such mental anguish and physical torture? Traumatic and harrowing accounts of the war came from soldiers letters home and their accounts after their ‘Tour of Duty’. Many soldiers rebelled and threw their medals away, grew their hair long and joined the peace movement.

  5. Eventual Reaction Amongst The Politicians Many politicians were influenced by public opinion (voters!), but many also by their own feelings of guilt and horror at the anguish that the war had caused many American people.

  6. Don’t forget the impact that the media and music had. Newspapers, magazines, radio and live television all played a large part in influencing public opinion both at the beginning and towards the end of the war. • It’s also worth remembering that not everyone was against the war – even in 1972! Many Americans still believed that the war should be fought to prevent the Domino Theory, to stop Communism spreading throughout the world. If America could not stop ‘The Reds’ who could?
