  2. Description This module will provide you with information on searching Cinahl via EBSCOhost. This course has 29 slides and should take 20-30 minutes to complete. It is followed by a 10 question post-test. Last reviewed: 05/09

  3. Objectives Upon completion of this module, the participant will: • Understand what information is included in Cinahl. • Understand how to execute a search in Cinahl. • Understand how to apply limits in Cinahl.

  4. What is CINAHL? • Cinahl stands for Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature. • The database covers the following areas: • Nursing, Cardiopulmonary Technology, Emergency Services, Health Education, Laboratory Technology, Medical Assistance, Medical Records, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy.

  5. What is CINAHL? • Includes journal articles, healthcare books, nursing dissertations, selected conference proceedings, and standards of professional practice, educational software, and publications of the American Nurses Association & the National League of Nursing. • Covers 1982-present; 70% of the citations are also in MEDLINE.

  6. Accessing CINAHL You will find a link to CINAHL in the Quick Links on the Health Sciences Library’s home page at http://library.luhs.org

  7. Planning a Search • Develop your question. • How do patients cope with leukemia? • Divide the question into important searchable concepts. • Concept 1: Leukemia • Concept 2: Coping • Search each concept separately, and then combine. • Do not search general terms like effect, results.

  8. Searching CINAHL • On the CINAHL Headings search screen, enter the first concept for your question. • CINAHL will map the term or phrase to the most appropriate subject heading.

  9. Searching CINAHL • Check the box in front of the most appropriate heading. • Check the Explode box, to search for the concept as well as narrower, more specific terms. Click Search.

  10. Searching CINAHL • Subheadings are used to further describe a particular aspect of a CINAHL subject heading. • Find Subheadings by clicking on the hyperlinked subject heading. Example: click on the word Leukemia.

  11. Searching CINAHL To narrow your search, you may select one or more subheadings that relate directly to your question. Click Searchto search the term with subheading(s). Caution: The use of subheadings is very restrictive, be careful in using them.

  12. Searching CINAHL • Check the Major Concept box if you want to retrieve articles where the search term is the major focus of the article. Citations retrieved will be more relevant and specific. • Caution: the use of major concept is very restrictive; be careful using it.

  13. Searching CINAHL • The search term is posted to the main screen. In this example, the search will retrieve articles about the diagnosis of leukemia.

  14. Searching CINAHL • To search your next concept, click on the Tab CINAHL Headings and repeat the steps in slides 8-12.

  15. Searching CINAHL • Once all the concepts have been searched, combine the terms to focus your results.

  16. Searching CINAHL • On the Search History screen, check the boxes (1) in front of the concepts you want to combine. • Click on Search with AND (2) to execute the search. 2 1
