  2. Mosquitos/Malaria C.Y. • Contracted through mosquito bites • Over 40,000 cases of malaria between ‘65 and 70’ • High fever, anemia and flu-like symptoms • Can Lead to organ failure/death

  3. CP Pills & Preventing Disease C.Y • Anti-Malaria pills • Chloraquine-Primaquine • Yellow or white • “Monday pills” “Dailys” • Taken weekly • Causes diarrhea

  4. RA Fire Ants -light brown and red -stinging ants -some people are allergic to the venom -daily threats for soldiers in Vietnam

  5. RA Leeches -Tiny parasites in the water -Attach to you and suck your blood -Pull them off - Annoyance to soldiers

  6. MW Dysentery • Inflammatory disorder of the intestine • Often contracted from contaminated water • Causes water loss and ultimately death from dehydration

  7. AP Snakes/Other Insects & Animals - “The Two Step” Snake- fast acting deadly venom - Bengal Tiger- mauls people to death - Scorpion- deadly venom

  8. Michael Wizowski Dehydration • is the excessive loss of body water • causes by exercise, heat, and lack of water • can be fatal • the thirst

  9. BG Jungle Rot • similar to trench foot • blisters and lesions occurred • caused by microbacteria and prolonged exposure to wet conditions • could occur not just on the feet, butgfgg in other damp places (ex. armpits) • very bad for morale, as even walking became uncomfortable and painful

  10. BG Monsoon Conditions • caused by temperature • differences between land and water • change in precipitation and wind • Rain during the south monsoon (May-Sep) • Floods and heavy rain caused flooding and jungle rot for the soldiers
