  1. 11 11-1 Computer Systems 11-2 Business Applications of Technology 11-3 Other Technology Issues Business and Technology

  2. Goals Identify the main elements of a computer system. Describe input devices and processing activities. Explain computer storage media and output types. Chapter 11 LESSON 11-1Computer Systems

  3. Chapter 11 Key Terms • computer system • hardware • software • computer network • central processing unit (CPU) • program • computer language • operating system software • application software

  4. Chapter 11 Computers in Society • Computers are everywhere. • Stores • Factories • Hospitals • Banks • Offices • Homes • Managers must plan and implement computerized activities and decide how best to use technology to serve the production and distribution needs of the organization.

  5. Input Processing Memory and storage Output Chapter 11 ELEMENTS OF A COMPUTER SYSTEM

  6. Examples: • Keyboard • Microphone • Mouse • Monitor • Printers Chapter 11 Elements of a computer system Hardware – physical elements of a computer system (items that can be touched) Software – the instructions that run the computer system • Examples: • Word processing • Spreadsheet • communication

  7. Network – computers linked together • Share hardware, software, and data • Largest network in the world – the Internet • Internet • For accessing the World Wide Web (a subset of the Internet) • For exchanging e-mail • intranet • Functions like a typical Web site • Used to share information within an organization Chapter 11 COMPUTER NETWORKS

  8. List the four main elements of a computer system. Chapter 11 >> C H E C K P O I N T

  9. First major component of a computer system Input devices- used to put data into a computer Chapter 11 INPUT • Examples: • Keyboard – most common • Mouse – most common • Joystick • Touch-sensitive monitors • Light pens • Scanners • microphones

  10. Second major component of a computer system Processing takes place in the central processing unit (cpu) – the “brains” In a pc the cpu consists of tiny wafers or chips that carry instructions and data The instructions are written with a program – step-by-step instructions that tell the computer what to do Chapter 11 PROCESSING

  11. Computer language – a system of letters, words, numbers, and symbols used to communicate with a computer. • Two main types of computer programs: • Operating system software – translates commands and allows application programs to interact with the computer hardware • Application software – programs that perform specific tasks • Games, accounting, calculator Chapter 11 PROCESSING

  12. Windows OS X Linux Chapter 11 Operating system software

  13. Word processing • MS Word – PC • Pages – Mac • Spreadsheet • OpenOffice – PC or Mac • MS Excel - PC • Numbers – Mac • Payroll • Quickbooks Chapter 11 Application software

  14. What are common input devices? Chapter 11 >> C H E C K P O I N T

  15. Third major component of a computer system Temporarily stores the program and data Measured in megabytes(mb) and gigabytes (gb) Volatile – when power is turned off whatever is stored in memory is removed Chapter 11 MEMORY

  16. Saving for later use Internal – memory Auxiliary – hard drive Auxiliary External – cds, dvd, flash drives Chapter 11 Storage

  17. Final component of a computer system • Purpose of computer processing • Results of processed data • Types: • Text • Graphic • Audio • video Chapter 11 OUTPUT
