  1. Making it All F.I.T.: Support Services AQIP Strategic Priorities Instruction

  2. AQIP Dev Ed Action Project “Improve success rates of students in developmental and subsequent coursework.” • Building upon the improved model of support we’ve developed: • Linkage Report Comparison before and after 2001 • Linkage Report is the value-added knowledge increase in reading, writing and math scores using Compass and CAAP scores: • We’ve seen substantial improvement in Reading and Math scores

  3. Dev Ed Structure • Dev Ed is an academic department [Important] • Dr. Sherry Wilson is the Chair • Most faculty work in other departments [Considered a ‘good’ model in literature] • Math 40, 50, 100 • English: COMM 80, 100 • Reading: LOC 40, 50, 90 • The Student Success Coordinator is a program director reporting to Sherry for just the 4 Student Success Courses: • College Orientation COLL 101(required by all) • College Success LOC 100 (elective) • College Connections LOC 103 (for students on probation & suspension) • Career Directions LOC 105 (elective) • Mandatory Placement since about 2001 but slowly got to full enforcement: Math, English and reading needed for history and political science

  4. AQIP Developmental Ed. Tune-Up--Improving Student Success & Retention Improve Academic Progress and Completion Improve Student Readiness Some Interventions Over 65% of students enter our developmental education system at Crowder • Better placement and testing (AQIP#1) • Improved diagnostics and remediation via Mastery Model • Expanded and revised tutoring for Mastery Dev Ed Students Dev Ed We lose over 51% of our development ed students College-Entry D.E. • Improve college-level success through better assurance that student meet course competencies (AQIP#2) • Create Math and Writing Labs and expand other tutoring • Improve career placement and university transfer College Loss of more (especially CTE) students Transfer to Universities Career & Tech Students for employers

  5. Action Project Activities: Systems Level • Define developmental education • For placement within the Student Success umbrella • For tracking of numbers • Examination into Best Practices inDevelopmental Education • Mandatory Placement: Access vs. Insuring Student Success • Become widely read/studied • Crowder has a lot of things right • Explore NADE Certification • Bring in guest speakers

  6. Action Project Activities • Define success and how to track it Longitudinal Success of in the Pipeline • For each semester MATH 40 cohorts, how many make it through the next class; how many make it through the terminal college math course? How many of these successful students came in with a C, B or A. • Example: for the Fall 2004 Math 40 cohort, not a single student with a C made it through the terminal math course. • Do the same analysis for MATH 50, MATH 100, dev English and reading Snapshot Success for individual courses • What percentage of students in each class get an A, B, C,D, F, D and (certain) Ws. • Overtime, are these percentages getting better? • Second year of data for College Orientation • This data built into new Institutional Effectiveness Measure and Data Warehouse plans

  7. Action Project Activities:Before entering the Pipeline • Develop AEL/ELI/Dev Ed competency and logistical linkages and efficiencies • High School College Courses • AEL Developmental Education courses • ESL English Language Institute (ELI) • Sharing instructors • Stacking courses (with for-credit and w/o in same class for better efficiency, too) • ELI Dev Ed Courses • Moved ELI to Dev Ed Department • Dev Education College Courses

  8. Action Project Activities:Before entering the Pipeline • Improve communication of college-level expectations with high school partners • via MODEC and brochure!! • Robust dual credit, enrollment: new coordinator • Superintendent reports! meetings, etc. • Review and Change of placement scores • Review and change in placement options • Aim towards having at least two assessment options for all placements

  9. Action Project Activities:In the pipeline • Improve the package of 4 college success courses • LOC 103: Extra pay for faculty to meet with students twice for Student Success Plan (IEP) • Do Mastery Learning pilots in Math 40 and 50 • Breakdown of units to find match with PLATO • Do Supplemental Instruction Pilot • Improve faculty awareness and responsiveness through improved roster information on student math, English and reading deficiencies

  10. Action Project Activities:In the pipeline • Explore avenues to improve student motivation • OnCourse materials (free) • Self-assessment quizzes and assignments • Possible role in success courses

  11. Action Project Activities:Explorations • What is the impact of developmental reading courses on student success in courses requiring reading prereq? • No strong correlation in preliminary data analysis • Plan to analyze reading level in current history and poly sci texts used • Further investigations

  12. Action Project Activities:Explorations • Identify possible alterative methods to accelerate developmental course work completion • Summer offerings/institute (concept stage) • Piloted 8-week sections (with poor student results) • Piloted Extended semester (one student) • Identify job-oriented programs for non-completers of dev ed program
