  2. In the poem: • The speaker describees various features of his country – valleys, the veldt, mountains and the sea. The qualities he appreciates in his country are love, peace, joy, health and wealth, and the unity of its people. The poem is celebratory in tone, written in the style of a praise song.

  3. This is a simple poem where a poet depicts his love for South Africa, calling forth praise from the valleys, the plains, the mountains and the sea, as well as from all the people living therein. It is, however, poetry with a purpose: to unite the people in passion for their country. This is not the poet speaking of his own inner self but rather the poet striking a nationalistic tone.

  4. Personification dominates the poem In Stanza 1-4 he talks about the natural beauty of his country. In Stanza 5 he talks about the people of the country What is significant about the word “shall” in the last line? The word ‘shall’ along with the placing of the line on its own, emphasises that there shall most definitely be a celebration which takes place for the joy, love, hope, etc. of the country (South Africa)
