  2. My name is Alex Sahrakar • My theme is: • Negative impacts on the environment • I am testing IB Art HL (year 2) Introduction

  3. Through the lengthy growing process of my artwork, I have directed the overall theme to man’s (and society’s) negative impacts on the environment. My work is geared toward opening the eyes of the viewers to small things we do that can severely damage the planet in which we inhabit. The minimalism and simplicity in my work has come from growth, realization, and development, which have taken place over the two years of the IB Art course. My first year of IB Art was a blur. Various factors led me to be purely lost as to the focuses of the IB Art course. Through some VERY EXTENSIVE trial and error, I was able to come to terms with the fact that I get the most enjoyment and satisfaction from my artwork, when it is simply acrylic paint on canvas. Coming into my second year of IB Art, I found an interest in blending colors and experimenting with shading techniques. Though acrylic paint may lack sophistication as a type of media, the broad spectrum of colors and ways I combine them, always accurately reflect the mood of the scenes I paint. My second year of IB Art was the same time I got deeper into my outside hobby of trail running. Being outside, in the midst of the dirt and the trees, I have learned to connect with, appreciate, and respect nature. Hence, most of my artwork is influenced by what I see out on the trails! I enjoy painting landscapes and nature scenes. Most of the research I do while working on a new piece, stems from the curiosity that arouses when I find a new “issue” out in the wilderness. I believe the simplicity in my paintings effectively conveys the ideas I am trying to communicate, and puts a light on things that should be heard and tended to. Candidate Statement

Lost in the Smog Title: Lost in the Smog Piece Number: 1 Size: 6 X 8 inches Media: Acrylic paint on canvas Data Completed: August 2011 Theme: Despite the peaceful nature of a clean ocean, factories and buildings continue to expel harmful pollutants, without hesitation. Culture/Artist: American culture; Tracy Lee Stum Influence: Peaceful sailboat paintings on landscapes are always a peek into an idealistic, beautiful, and flawless world.

  5. Likes: The use of color and the newly-discovered simplistic painting techniques. This piece really helped me grasp my theme and reconnect with my love for painting. • Dislikes: The amount of time it took was excessive. The size is rather small. • Learn: I can create a beautiful piece with simply acrylic paint on a small canvas. I love using color, and do not need to take an extended period of time to create a perfect drawing. Simplicity is key! Reflect: Lost in the Smog

Fading Away Title: Fading Away Piece Number: 2 Size: 8 X 6 inches Media: Acrylic paint on canvas Date Completed: September 2011 Theme: The barren meadows and untouched forests cannot go unharmed; where there’s yet another way to cater to human needs, we will leap at the chance. Culture/Artist: American; Tracy Lee Stum Influence: Endless highways. My trips around the world- and across the country.

  7. Likes: The colors in this piece are perfectly expressive of this aspect to my overall theme. (browns, greens, black, grey) • Dislikes: The difficulty I had with perspective. I would like to not worry about the smaller details with my artwork, and be able to focus on the connection to the theme and the color usage/symbolism. • Learn: More simplicity! I need to work a little more with perspective or steer clear of it completely… Reflect: Fading Away

Losing Power Title: Losing Power Piece Number: 3 Size: 11 X 14 inches Media: Acrylic paint on canvas Date Completed: October 2011 Theme: The “smaller” things we use for convenience, can actually cause harm to the environment- the sky and the creatures that inhabit it. Culture/Artist: American; Tracy Lee Stum Influence: Overuse of fossil fuels and excessive uses sources of electricity.

Likes: I like the mood that this piece created with the colors, and the minimalist aspect, as the “decaying” power-plant is the only aspect of the picture. • Dislikes: The patchiness in the sky at some points, when I was mixing colors. Want to use something other than birds? • Learn: I learned that it is very difficult for me to do BIGGER art pieces! It is a challenge, as I already have a fear of doing art pieces with too much detail and design. I prefer smaller, more concentrated pieces, focusing of simplicity and minimalism. Reflect: Losing Power

  10. Wrapped Up Title: Wrapped Up Piece Number: 4 Size: 10 X 8 inches Media: Acrylic paint on canvas Date Completed: November 2011 Theme: The loss of nature to manmade creations. Culture/Artist: American; Vincent van Gogh Influence: We now encounter so many manmade damns, rivers, lakes. The absolute disgrace is the reason behind this being to make various things better convenient for US.

  11. Likes: I like how this piece is so different from all of the others. The lines are all consistent, as well as the colors and shapes. A very balanced work, and the abstract nature creates curiosity and interest. • Dislikes: That it is difficult for people to tell what the painting is depicting. • Learn: If more of my paintings are abstract, it will leave room for interpretation. The colors in this painting give a lot toward the meaning and message. Reflect: Wrapped Up

Bumps in the Road Title: Bumps in the Road Piece Number: 5 Size: 8 X 10 inches Media: Acrylic on canvas Date Completed: December 2011 Theme: Humans have no regard for the harm they are inducing on the “small” pieces of the environment. Lack of respect for the world we are inhabiting. Culture/Artist: American; Dion Archibald Influence: Running in the beautiful outdoors and enjoying being a part of nature. I have the upmost respect for something I am part of.

  13. Likes: This is my favorite piece! I love the detail in the graffiti in the rock, as it stands out, to the perfect degree. • Dislikes: Lacking a little bit on the perspective angle. Hopeful that people can recognize what it is. • Learn: How to blend with acrylic paint (not too much water). Spend more time on the “environmental harming” aspect. Reflect: Bumps in the Road

So Close, yet so Far Away Title: So Close, yet so Far Away Piece Number: 6 Size: 8 X 10 inches Media: Acrylic paint on canvas Date Completed: December 2011 Theme: We will do whatever it takes to increase accessibility for things we do for pleasure. Culture/Artist: American; Anna Althea Hills Influence: Traveling and being hit with the shocking sight of the scars on the mountains.

  15. Likes: The colors and the message of the painting. It is accurately portrayed and yet it is very simple. It is relevant to the area in which I live. • Dislikes: Not sure that people will understand WHAT it is. Are the colors too cool for the “harsh” message? • Learn: I can pile on the colors to more effectively blend them. Difficult to use new texture, as in the trees on the mountains. Reflect: So Close, yet so Far Away
