  1. South Lewis Central School District “RttT Mini-Series 5” April2014 Faculty Meeting

  2. Learning Targets… • To discuss the importance of CFU = Check for Understanding • Check for Understanding of faculty on RttT using senteos • Video, awareness of the psychology behind how humans handle change – we certainly have had a lot and will continue to have educational change that impacts all of us

  3. CFU… • Constantly and regularly checking for student understanding is the #1 research proven way to increase student learning • Requires students to summarize their learning (helping them store it in their brains) • Gives teacher in-put on who does and doesn’t have the learning, so immediate adjustments can be made to the instruction

  4. CFU… • What is it: • Constant throughout each lesson (every 3-5 minutes) • Teacher decides what kids do and don’t have: • Answers to questions • Observations of work • Students give feedback on how they’re learning • Fist to Five • Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down • At the end of each lesson/daily basis • Exit Ticket • Homework • On a weekly or every few days basis • Quiz • Senteos • More long term • Unit test • Benchmark test • Full Year • Final Exam/SLO Post Test • Regents/State Exam See Hand-Out!

  5. Some Places CFU is Included in Modules/Domains… • Exit Tickets • Homework • Mid-Module and End-of-Module Assessments • Daily Problem Sets • Fist to Five Protocol • Whiteboard Exchanges • Fluency Activities

  6. CFU on RttT • This is our 5th mini-series session on RttT concepts and the last one for this school year • May=budget presentation • June=end of year logistics • We want some data to check for understanding and know how to plan for future PD (summer and next year) • Senteo questions – Mr. Carpenter is happy to assist teachers with putting some questions on senteos as a way to CFU!

  7. Change Video… • Awareness of the psychology behind how humans handle change – we certainly have had a lot and will continue to have educational change that impacts all of us • Look at the picture. Do you see your self as the rider on the back or the elephant? No answer is right or wrong, and it’s ok if you change depending on different situations in your life (professionally, personally, as a parent, as a spouse, etc.)

  8. Elephant and Rider… http://vimeo.com/22029979

  9. Time for Personal Reflection… • Now that you understand how the rider and the elephant relate to our brains handling change, do you feel your “rider” side of your brain or your “elephant” side dominates when dealing with the changes in education we have been faced with over the past few years, or are they equal? • What insight do you gain about yourself from this answer?
