  2. Foundation Curriculum • SOWK 600 – Social Welfare/Soc. Policy • SOWK 640 & 641 – Human Behavior I & II • SOWK 670 – Social Work Research • SOWK 630 & 631 – Soc. Work Pract. I & II • SOWK 635 & SOWK 636 – Foundation Field (2 days a week – starting in fall) Total of 24 credits of 60 credits for MSW

Advanced Curriculum • Choose concentration – Clinical or Management and Community Organization (MACO) • Choose specialization – Aging, Families & Children, Health, Mental Health, & Social Action and Community Development (MACO only); sub-spec. in EAP, Substance Abuse, and Child, Adolescent, & Family Health. Total advanced curr. = 36 credits • Curriculum guides are online

Advanced Curriculum – 8 courses + advanced field (two semesters) • Advanced policy (after SOWK 600) • Advanced research (after SOWK 670) • Two required courses in each concentration – SWCL 700 & 744 in Clinical and SWOA 703 & 704 in MACO • Two more concentration related courses; Clinical = SWCL; MACO = SWOA • Course meeting diversity requirement/elective • Elective

  5. Course Options for Spring Take two of the following three: • SOWK 600 – Social Welfare & Soc. Policy • SOWK 640 – Human Behavior I • SOWK 670 – Social Work Research They are not offered at Shady Grove Exemption exams are available for these, and SOWK 641– call Ms. Hicks at 410-706-5102

  6. Summer Semester • Having taken 2 classes (600, 640, or 670) in the spring, in the summer you may take SOWK 670. This has implications for the fall and is not recommended unless you want to lighten the load each semester as much as possible. • Note: 9-15 credits is full-time tuition

  7. Fall Semester Full-Time (register in April) Take SOWK 630 – Social Work Practice I + SOWK 635 Foundation Field Instruction and: a. If you took 600 and 670 – take 640 b. If you took 600 and 640 – take 641 &/or 670 c. If you took 640 and 670 – take 641 &/or 600 With a, b, or c – if you know your concentration or specialization, you may take your advanced policy (if you took 600 earlier) and/or your advanced research (if you took 670 earlier)

There are Financial Implications • 6 credits – you are part-time and pay per credit • 9-15 credits you are full-time regardless of whether you are taking 9 credits or 15 • If you want to be here for 4 years and spread out courses as much as possible, including summer, it is possible to be in school for no more than 2 classes or field and one class at anyone time

One Spread-Out Schedule: Spring ’11-Summer ‘14 • Spring ‘11 – 600 or 670 and 640 • Summer ’11– 670 • Fall ‘11- 630 + 635 • Spring ‘12 - 631 + 636 • Summer ‘12– 1 course • Fall ‘12– 641 + 1 course (not Advanced field) • Spring ‘13- 2 courses (not Advanced field) • Summer ‘13- 1 course • Fall ‘13– Advanced field + 1 course (9 cr.) • Spring ‘14– Advance field + 1 course (9 cr.) • Summer ‘14– 1 course

One typical Full-Time Schedule • Spring ‘11– 2 courses ( from 600, 640, 670) = 6 credits • Fall ‘11– 630+635+ (640/600/670) = 9 cr. • Spring ‘12– 631+636+641+ 2 advanced courses = 15 credits • Fall ‘12– Advanced field+3 advanced courses=15 credits • Spring ‘13– Advanced field+3 advanced courses = 15 credits= GRADUATION May 2013 If you take a summer course or 12 credits in first fall, it lightens load

Other Points • Schedule is on the web a year in advance (look in mid-March) • Advanced field can be 3 days a week Sept.- May or 2 days a week Sept. - July • You must take a methods course with advanced field (SWCL for Clinical, SWOA for MACO) • Meet with your advisor – a list will appear in mailroom and online shortly – and read the Bulletin daily

  12. Advanced Standing Typical Schedule for Spring Admits • Two courses in the spring • Three courses in the fall + Advanced field • Three courses in the spring + adv. Field or Two courses in the spring, one in the summer, two in the fall + field, two in the spring + field, and one in the next summer

  13. Writing Sample • At the conclusion of the first Human Behavior I class (SOWK 640) you will be asked to write a brief (20 – 30 minute) response to a question. This will be screened by us to see if more assistance with writing is needed. We will inform you if it is. Students who are not taking SOWK 640 this spring will complete the writing sample in the fall when taking SOWK 640.
