  1. Do NOW!!! • After taking your seat, take out your binder and get ready to start working on your bellringer.

  2. August 27, 2014 7th Grade American History – 2B

  3. Bellringer! • What system or term is this map portraying? • What is the point of trade? • Which three powers are participating in trade in this map?

  4. Row people, pass the “Fast Track to America” books down the row • Complete the document based questions for the John Smith passage

  5. Document Based Questions • In the first part of the passage, what are some similarities and differences Smith lists about the Jamestown and England? • How did the tone of John Smith’s Tale change after the colonists’ largest ship left Jamestown to sail back to England? • According to the passage, how would you describe the relationship between the settlers and the Native Americans? • After being elected to rule Jamestown, John Smith made the rule: “He that will not work shall not eat.” What do you think this rule says about life in the colonies at this time?

  6. Mercantilism Role-Play ENGLAND, FRANCE and NETHERLANDS

  7. ENGLAND, FRANCE and NETHERLANDS (aka: The Dutch) • 3 Competing Countries • All have explorers, who are out looking around, and claiming land… • WHAT DO THEY WANT!? POWER • How do they get it?! Make MONEY!

  8. How do we make money? •  ENGLAND, FRANCE and NETHERLANDS -   All have manufacturing (turning raw goods into finished products) and trade ships -   ENGLAND makes FURNITURE -   NETHERLANDS makes CLOTHING - FRANCE makes TOOLS -   All countries, although competing for trade goods and gold, rely on each other

  9. Let’s Play the Mercantilism Game!Round 1: • You have to spend money to make money!!! • Soooo…. • ENGLAND pays one gold to create furniture • NETHERLANDS pays one gold to create clothing • FRANCE pays one gold to create tools

  10. ENGLAND sends FURNITURE and one gold to NETHERLANDS & FRANCE • NETHERLANDS sends CLOTHING and one gold to ENGLAND & FRANCE • FRANCE sends TOOLS and one gold to ENGLAND & NETHERLANDS

  11. Review Questions: • Is anyone making more money? • How could someone make more money? • What is interdependence?

  12. SUDDENLY England finds a colony. • We’ll name the colony NEW England. (Clever?!) • Although the colony only has little gold, it is proven to have raw materials that the mother country can get cheaply to create its finished products.

  13. Round 2: English ColoniesLet’s Play! • ENGLAND sends ONE gold to the colonies for raw material • TWO FURNITURES Are then made for that ONE gold – • THE COLONIES send over a gold and get furniture. • NETHERLANDS sends over a gold and buys FURNITURE • FRANCE sends over a gold and buys FURNITURE

  14. Oh Yeah… • ENGLAND can now also make CLOTHING & TOOLS because the raw materials are in the colonies. • CLOTHING, FURNITURE and TOOLS are now produced by ENGLAND •  WHO WINS? WHO LOSES?

  15. Review Questions: • What is a colony? • What is a mother country? • Who wins? Who is benefitting from this deal? • Who loses? What can they do about this situation to help them make more money? • Why can’t the colonies make their own finished goods? • Who is dependent on whom in this situation?

  16. ROUND 3: French and Dutch ColoniesLet’s Play! • FRANCE and NETHERLANDS like what England is doing to make money so they discover their own colonies. • They are now able to produce CLOTHING, TOOLS and FURNITURE themselves. • ENGLAND, FRANCE and NETHERLANDS now try to compete. • All have raw materials, manufacturing and shipping.

  17. Review Questions: • For what purpose did the Netherlands (Dutch) and the French want to discover their own colonies?

  18. Round 4: The Navigation Acts • England realizes that their profit from their colonies is being shared with other countries. • The English colonies are using French and Dutch ships to send their goods to Europe because their ships are cheaper! They are trying to save $$$$!!!

  19. So English Parliament passed the Navigation Acts! • Only allowed the colonists to trade w/ Britain • Colonial merchants could not send goods to England in foreign ships (even if the foreign ships were cheaper) • Prohibited the colonist from sending certain products (sugar or tobacco) outside of England’s empire

  20. Round 5: Now what?! • Imagine your mother country not allowing you to make your own trading decisions regarding YOUR business! • You have to pay $100 to use English ships now, whereas you used to only pay $25 to use a French ship to send your goods to Europe.

  21. Review Questions: • What is Parliament? • Why did they pass the Navigation Acts? • Who did these acts hurt? Why?

  22. Round 5: • The Navigation Acts say that you have to use English ships… • You feel like you are wasting money! • What do you do?

  23. Round 5: • Some colonists ignored the Navigation Acts and began smuggling. • How do you feel about the colonists smuggling?

  24. Review Questions: • What is smuggling? • Why did the colonists feel the need to smuggle? • How do the English feel about the colonists smuggling? Why? • Whose side would you choose?

  25. Bring materials for project to next class • Bring red folder! • Project due Tuesday September 2
