In this comparison, I discuss my experiences with Microsoft Office and Apache OpenOffice, highlighting their functionality, advantages, and disadvantages. Microsoft Office, launched in 1990, is known for its full features and customer support, though it requires purchase. In contrast, Apache OpenOffice, released in 2000 as a free and customizable open-source software, offers limited functionality and no official customer support. Depending on budget and needs, one may choose Microsoft Office for reliability or OpenOffice for cost-effectiveness and idealism.

David vs. Goliath OpenOffice Microsoft Office
My reason to choose these products • I have used both products myself, and just recently installed the newest version of OpenOffice on my work computer. • Why have I purchased Microsoft Office for myself? I needed software that anyone could open, with OpenOffice unfortunately that was not the case.
History Microsoft Office Apache Open Office • The first version of MS Office was released in 1990 • MS Office sells at a rate of one copy per second • OpenOffice was first released in 2000 • The current version Apache OpenOffice has been downloaded over five million times so far
Functionality Microsoft Office Apache Open Office Features include: • Microsoft Word • Microsoft Excel • Microsoft PowerPoint • Microsoft Access Features include: • OpenOffice Writer • OpenOffice Calc • OpenOffice Impress • OpenOffice Base
Advantages MICROSOFT OFFICE • Full functionality • Product website with tutorials • Customer support • Very appealing design APACHE OPENOFFICE • Free download • Open source software can be customized to suit individual needs • Website with information and forums
Disadvantages MICROSOFT OFFICE • Has to be purchased • Not customizable APACHE OPENOFFICE • Limited functionality • No customer support • Less appealing design
Which one to choose? • Well, it depends. OpenOffice is similar to MS Office, but of course not identical. People familiar with either product can switch without too much difficulty. • One problem is that OpenOffice files sometimes cannot be opened by MS Office users without difficulty. (I never experienced the issue the other way around.)
Continued… • If money is no object I would be inclined to purchase MS office, because it works and support is available. • However, if a company has a limited budget OpenOffice might be a viable option. • Another reason to choose OpenOffice would be idealism. It is a small ‘company’ and especially computer savvy users might appreciate the ability to actually access the source code and make changes to customize the software.
