Understanding the Truth About Sin: Its Nature, Consequences, and God’s Grace

Sin is often seen as a negative subject, yet it was the reason for the coming of the sinless Son of God (Rom. 5:6-8). All have sinned (Rom. 3:23), making the study of sin pertinent. Sin is defined as failing to comply with God's law (I Jn. 3:4), and can occur through commission or omission. It highlights spiritual maturity and has fleeting pleasures (Heb. 11:25). Ultimately, sin separates us from God (Isa. 59:1,2). Despite societal views, sin remains unchanged throughout time. Understanding it leads us to recognize the necessity of divine grace.

  1. The Truth about Sin Sin is a negative subject. However, it was sin that occasioned the coming of the sinless Son of God (Rom. 5: 6-8). All have sinned; hence, sin is a timely study (Rom. 3: 23).

  2. The Truth about Sin • Sin is failing to comply with God’s law (I Jn. 3: 4) There is going beyond God’s teaching (2 Jn. 9). There is failing to do what is taught (Jas. 4: 17). Hence, one can sin either by commission, omission, or both.

  3. The Truth about Sin • Hamartia, literally, a missing of the mark, but this etymological meaning is largely lost sight of in the N. T.” (W. E. Vine).

  4. The Truth about Sin • Teaching about speech(Eph. 4: 29); contending for the faith(Jude 3); walking wisely(Eph. 5: 15); redeeming the time(Eph. 5: 16); pure mind(Phili. 4: 8); and prayer(Phili. 4: 6).

  5. The Truth about Sin All such is sin!

  6. The Truth about Sin • Sin often indicates the level of maturity. Consider Galatians 4: 19-21.

  7. The Truth about Sin • Sin offers pleasure for the sinner. However, only temporary (Heb. 11: 25).

  8. The Truth about Sin • Sin separates the sinner form God. God cannot abide sin (Isa. 59: 1, 2).

  9. The Truth about Sin • The sinner is responsible for his sin. Adam and Eve and man in general (Gen. 3: 12; 13; Jas. 1: 13-15).

  10. The Truth about Sin • Conclusion:Sin remains sin, it matters not how it is viewed by man, society, or the church. Sin does not know time limitations or restrictions. What was sin in the First Century, continues to be sin today. The truth about sin remains the truth!
