  1. Country Factors - GE in Asia BA 804, Fall 2004 Ram Mudambi Temple University

  2. GE’s approach to country strategy • Comment on GE’s ‘formula’ • ‘Take a universal corporate culture, transplant it into a multitude of native soils, and then, by nurturing local talent, let it grow to suit local conditions.’

  3. Chairman Jack on stake-holding • Speaking at a Tokyo forum last fall, Mr. Welch said that hanging on to dud businesses is "the cruelest form of management." • The forum's moderator asked: Doesn't it reduce employees' morale to know that their division might be sold someday? Mr. Welch shot back: "God almighty, do you want to go in and watch people with their heads down, no smiling, working in hopeless situations? That is crazy! That's not culture, that's not kindness; that's cruelty."

  4. Rugman’s recommendations • Develop strategies to take account of regional blocs (EU, NAFTA) rather than multilateral agreements like WTO • Do not try to develop so-called global strategies • Develop analytical methods to assess regional drivers of success, rather than globalization drivers • Think regional, act local; forget global

  5. Questions • To what extent does GE conform to Rugman’s recommendations? • What are the key drivers that make this strategy work? • Is this a strategy for everyone?
