The Quick Facts • Any nonconsensual sexual act obtained through threat, force, chemical impairment or unable to consent to act • 83% of reported cases are women <25 years • About 15% of victims report the incident to healthcare professionals or law enforcement, thus most rapists will never be incarcerated • 2/3 of victims personally new the perpetrator • http://www.rainn.org/statistics

SANE/SART • 5/7 of victims regretted making the report • Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner • Specifically trained to assess, document, and obtain forensic evidence of sexual abuse • Provide health resources and referrals to victim • Sexual Assault Response Team • Counselors, healthcare professional, chaplain, social worker, law enforcement, attorney • (Johnston, 2005)

Post Rape Syndrome • Acute stage: tearful, agitated, panic attacks –or- flat affect, silent, resistant • neglect appearance, self, or home • Trouble concentrating, decision-making, recalling memories • Aversion to the perpetrator’s demographic, assault’s circumstances • Changes in appetite, sleep habits and daily routine • http://www.aest.org.uk/survivors/rts.html

Post Rape Syndrome • Outward Adjustment Stage – attempt s to resume ‘normal’ life, hidden turmoil • Anxiety, depression, emotionally labile, withdrawn, secluded • Pre-occupied with safety • Risky or self-injurious behaviors • Nightmares, insomnia, flashbacks, somatic symptoms • Impaired trust, hesitant to form new relationships, sexual aversion • Impaired social and work performance

  6.
