  2. Personality Traits that Promote Health • Personality: • A person’s unique blend of traits. • How do you get these traits: • Heredity • Environment • Behavior • Significant Adults

  4. Personality Traits that Promote Health • Sometimes you cannot control your environment or your heredity, but you can control your behavior! • Controlling your behavior: • Sense of humor • Knowledge of different subjects • Consideration for others • Optimism • Gratitude

  5. Expressing your Emotions • Emotions may change suddenly and unexpectedly. • Healthful Expressions: • Talking to someone when upset • Reflecting before acting • Going for a walk

  6. Expressing your Emotions • Unhealthy Expressions: • Ignoring emotions- holding them in • Displaced aggression- taking it out on someone unrelated to the situation. • Use of violence, drugs, overeating.

  7. Expressing Your Emotions • Boredom • Is usually encountered when someone has too much free time or focuses on only their own needs • To combat boredom- • Exercise • Do someone a favor • Spend time with friends • Develop more interests

  8. Expressing your emotions • ANGER!!! • Can result in saying things you don’t mean, violence and ruining relationships • KNOW YOUR TRIGGERS • Recognize the feeling • Take time out • Talk about it! • Find another activity

  9. Dealing with Anxiety, Insecurity, and Depression • Anxiety is a feeling of worry or uneasiness • Anxiety can be good and bad… Why? • Sometimes it is caused by Insecurity or lacking confidence

  10. Dealing with Anxiety, Insecurity and Depression • Self Esteem • An individual’s belief in him or herself.

  11. Dealing with Anxiety, Insecurity and Depression • Dealing with Depression • When feelings of unhappiness and moodiness persist and they effect your ability to function, this is a sign of depression. • It may be a chemical or biological disorder. • Not all causes are obvious.

Signs of depression Irritability Feelings of sadness Lack of desire to do anything Withdraw from family and friends Feelings of rejection Difficulty falling asleep or staying awake Change in appetite Unexplained weight gain or loss Difficulty concentrating Difficulty making decisions Dealing with Anxiety, Insecurity and Depression

Preventing Suicide • WARNING SIGNS! • Making statements like, “ You would be better off without me.” • Talking about suicide • Having a close friend or relative that committed suicide. • Giving away prized possessions • Taking risks. • Personality Change • Running away from home • Having no interest in future plans • Attempting suicide in the past

  16. Preventing Suicide • Recognizing Denial • Some people have trouble admitting that they have a problem. • The longer a problem exists the worst it usually becomes!
