  1. Mass Spectrometry Chapters 11 and 20

  2. Time of Flight Equation

  3. Quadrupole

  4. Quadrupole AC voltage (R.F.) • When field (-), ions attr. to rods • When field (+), ions pushed to center – more difficult to deflect heavy ions w/ AC voltage

  5. R.F. (ac voltage) only – quadrupoleis a high mass filter - R.F. has big influence on small mass - R.F. has little influence on large mass

  6. Quadrupole DC voltage (+) rods • Keep ions in center • Lighter ions can still hit rods on (-) part of AC voltage (-) rods • All ions drawn toward rods • Lighter ions can have (+) part of AC voltage repel them enough so they don’t hit rods High mass filter Low mass filter

  7. Detector: Electron Multipliers

  8. Best accuracy: Sector and FT-ICR Best resolution: FT-ICR Largest m/z range: TOF
