What’s the Difference? • Name Brand • trademark, or a distinctive name for a brand, or for a range of products by a single manufacturer • Store Brand • usually for multiple products and usually unadvertised, for products only sold at a particular group of retail outlets • Sell By Date • indicates the last day the product should remain on the store shelf. Allows a reasonable amount of time for home storage/use after that date. Examples are dairy products, cold cuts. • Use By Date • product may still be safe to eat after the date has passed. Quality will start to go down. Examples are breads, cereals, dressings etc.

  3. What Does it Really Mean? Label Claim What it Means • Calorie Free • Low Calorie • Light or Lite • Light in Sodium • Fat Free • Low Fat • Less than 5 calories • 40 Calories or less • 1/3 few calories or 50% less fat • 50% less sodium • Less than ½ gram fat • 3 grams or less fat

Label Claim What it means • Cholesterol Free • Low Cholesterol • Sodium Free • Very Low Sodium • Low Sodium • High Fiber • Less than 2 mg cholesterol • 20 mg or less cholesterol &2 grams or less sat. fat • Less than 5 mg sodium • 35 mg or less sodium • 140 mg or less sodium • 5 grams or more fiber

  7. Which is ‘calorie’ healthy? • At each station record for each food: • The number of calories per serving? • Record the number of calories from fat per serving? • Calculate the percent of calories from fat? • Fat calories/total calories x 100
