  2. Today • Begin theme 2: Tone (emotion and context) • Return Quiz!!

  3. Listening practice • http://www.elllo.org/english/0300/349KevinBroke01.htm • Listen to the clip. • This time, you do not need to listen to very specific details. • Listen to how the two speakers talk (listen to their “tones”).

  4. Listening practice • 1. casual, informal (semi-formal) • 2. interview • 3. don’t know each other, interviewer, interviewee • 4. interviewer: interested, sympathetic • interviewee: a little sad (down), exhausted (tired)

  6. Listening to emotion and context • Emotion and context can sometimes be more important than specific words and details. • These two elements can tell us a lot about spoken language. • Emotion: • Is the speaker angry? Excited? Sad? Confident?

  7. Listening to emotion and context • To understand tone, you don’t need to get every detail. • Just need the “emotion” in the speaker’s voice. • i.e., Are they aggressive? Relaxed? Scared?

  8. Listening to emotion and context • Context: • Is this a formal conversation? • Informal (casual) converstation? • Is the conversation happening at work? At school? At a party? • Is the conversation a business meeting? A university lecture? A chat between friends?

  9. Listening to emotion and context • The tone can tell us these things. • It helps us determine: • The relationship between the speakers. • The situation (context). • The speakers’ feelings (emotion).

  10. Listening to emotion and context • Knowing about tone can help us guess what people are talking about.

  11. Listening to emotion and context • Watch the video and write down your idea for: • Context/situation (i.e., two men are fighting about sports.) • Emotion of speakers • (i.e., one speaker is angry, one is afraid.)

  13. What is the context/situation for each conversation? • - Introducing friend - Guy is bothering the girls. • Is the conversation formal or informal? • Informal • What are the speakers’ feelings? • annoyed (bothered) interested (interested in the girl) confused (shy, awkward)

  14. What is the context/situation for each conversation? - conference (in a school, guest asking a speaker a question) • Is the conversation formal or informal? • Formal  informal • What are the speakers’ feelings? • Guest: excited, interested, enthusiastic • Speaker: little surprised, friendly

  15. Homework • Check the website for instructions (“Homework” section).
