Why use the Orid framework? • ORID's power comes from exposing and applying the human "inference ladder" of reasoning. • That's the conceptual ladder that your reasoning process "climbs," from the time you receive some information to when you make a decision. • In other words, it helps us to think through and make better decisions.

  3. What does ORID stand for? • O –Objective questions To examine the data To identify factual information • R - Reflective questions To encourage pupils to make connections To encourage free flow of ideas and imagination • I – Interpretive question To identify patterns and determine their significance or meaning To articulate underlying insights • D - Decisional questions To propose next steps To develop an action plan To make decisions To experience “coming together”

  4. So far… • All pupils have been using the ORID template to reflect upon their reading of a set novel

  5. What’s next • All pupil will craft ORID questions based on the book that they will be reading next (Aug/Sept) and answer those questions as part of their assignments.

  6. An example using Cinderella • O –Objective questions - Give three examples of how Cinderella’s stepsisters mistreated her. - What are four things that enabled Cinderella to attend the ball? • R - Reflective questions - How do you think Cinderella felt when she was mistreated? - How do you feel about the actions of the stepsisters? • I – Interpretive question - Do you think Cinderella should marry the prince? Why? - Do you agree with the ending of the book? Why? • D - Decisional questions - If you were Cinderella, what would you do about your stepsisters? - Do you think bullying or mistreatment is acceptable? What would you do if you encountered it?

  7. Now, it’s your turn! • You have to come up with 2 questions for each component of ORID and answer them to the best of your ability.
