  2. What is urban decay? One of the biggest problems of towns today is the poor condition of the old inner city areas. These have run-down housing, closed factories, pollution and vandalised, crumbling buildings. This is called urban decay.

  3. What problems and solutions can you see in the video clip?

  4. What problems does urban decay cause? It causes economic (money), social (people) and environmental (our surroundings) problems. Examples of urban decay are – • Slum housing - with outside toilets, overcrowding, no hot water or central heating • Many buildings have been poorly built and now have leaking roofs, draughty windows and crumbling stonework • Empty buildings are vandalised; gap sites where buildings have been knocked down turn into derelict land • As the factories and housing have been in the same areas air, noise and water pollution have been common

  9. What is urban renewal? Town councils have tried many ways of solving the problems of urban decay. They have tried to make the towns better places in which to live. This is called urban renewal (improving the condition of the town).

  10. Examples of urban renewal Some examples of how town councils have improved the inner city: • Replaced tenements with high rise flats • Renovating existing houses • Encouraging new businesses and industry to set up in area • Improve the environment with landscaping • Building or improving social facilities

Why were Urban Development Corporations set up? 3. Study map A. What were the main problems facing the London Dockland area in 1981? Write your answers under the following headings: shopping, industry, transport, employment, housing, open spaces. 4. What have the London Docklands Development Corporations done to solve the problems of urban decay? Write a detailed paragraph. 5. Was the urban renewal a complete success? Give reasons for your answer.
