  2. Writing Workshop (Preview) • The next slides will highlight the routines and procedures used in my second grade classroom for a writing workshop. This presentation is based upon the idea that my students have spent the last week conducting research about penguins. They have taken notes using a K-W-L chart, and spent at least thirty minutes on the previous day composing their rough draft. They had to respond to the following writing prompt...Many people say that penguins are unique animals. Do you agree?

  3. Writing Workshop • Today, we will compose to inform using major points and examples to support a main idea. • Take out your K-W-L charts, any notes you have about penguins, and your rough draft from yesterday. • You began a response to the following writing prompt… Many people say that penguins are unique animals. Do you agree?

  4. Procedure for today’s class… • I have reviewed what you started yesterday, and today, you will be broken into groups to continue working on your penguin writing project. • Your step (task) will be listed on the SMARTboard in a minute. We will go over the procedure for writing first. • When we get to the appropriate slide, you will need to find your name and read what your group is supposed to do first. • When you finish your step (task), move your name to the appropriate group that matches what you should do next, and complete that step (task).

  5. Procedure for today’s class… • For example, if you start out working on your rough draft in group #2, and you finish your rough draft and you’ve worked with a partner in your group to peer edit, you are going to move your name to group #1 to meet with me at the back table. • When you are in group #2, if you are peer editing with someone, you should be using a whisper partner voice. • If you finish typing your final copy, you need to move your name to group #4 and I should see you reading independently. If there is still time before the timer goes off, you should complete an SSR activity.

  6. Procedure for today’s class… • Be sure to move your name on the SMARTboard when you move groups. Your name should match the appropriate group and task at all times. For example, if you are meeting with me, I should see that your name is beside group #1. • I expect you to be on task and focused on your assignment at all times. When we begin, it will be an awesome opportunity to earn marbles for our class jar • I will set the timer for 30 minutes. When the timer goes off, you will know it is time to clean up and get ready for lunch.

  7. Today’s Steps Group #1- Talaya, Kemeshia, Daeqwan, Khalil, Jay’len Meet with Miss Mason-bring all material for the penguin project with you. Group #2- Samahria, Taevon, Caleb, David, Elora, Ja’Kiya, Tolu, Michael A. Finish your rough draft and begin revising. Use the super writer’s checklist as a resource to help you. Pair with a partner in group #2 to peer edit. When you’re ready for me to see your paper, move your name to group #1 and come to the back table. Group #3- Reilly, Mikah, Alexandra, Michael M, Temi Begin using the student laptops to type your final draft. Save your work in your folder on the student g-drive. Save as *Penguins.
