  1. Topic: Direct object pronouns Essential ?: How do I say “it” or “them” in Spanish?

  2. Direct objects • A direct object is the recipient of the action of a sentence • It is what is done • I throw the ball (what is thrown? The ball…that is the DO) • I need food (what is needed? Food…that is the DO) • She reads the book (what is read? The book…that is the DO)

  3. Direct object pronouns A direct object pronoun is a word that we use to refer to the direct object without naming it In English, the words are me, you, it, him/her, us, them The two most important ones are IT and THEM.

  4. Direct object pronouns • In Spanish: • Me = me • You = te • Him, it = lo • Her, it = la • Us = nos • Them = los, las • They go BEFORE THE CONJUGATED VERB

  5. Examples • María looks for the camera. • María la busca. • He talked to me. • Él me habló. • Do you have the books? No, Bob has them. • ¿Tienes los libros? No, Bob los tiene.

Important info to remember • In English, we sometimes use “it” at the beginning of the sentence or before a verb. • It is great. • It needs another coat of paint • It has all the answers • In Spanish, THERE IS NO WORD FOR THE “IT” WE USE TO START A PHRASE • It is = Es • It has = Tiene • It needs = Necesita

  8. A couple of exceptions • Do NOT use lo, la, los, las with ser or estar alone. (see info on “it” at the start of a phrase) • Don’t use lo, la, los, las with gustar or similar verbs. • I like it = me gusta (no “it” used) • I like them = me gustan • Connect the lo, la, los, las to the end of infinitive if you use it with an action AFTER gustar or AFTER a preposition • ¿El piano? Me gustatocarlopor la tarde. • Comílas enchiladas después de prepararlas.
