  1. Worship: The God Who is Not Us

  2. The Why of Worship: We were made to worship • “Everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory” (Isaiah 43:7) • “The people I formed for myself that they might proclaim my praise” (Isaiah 43:21) • “I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake” (Isaiah 43:25) • “I have refined you...for my own sake, I do this” (Isaiah 48:10-11).

  3. The What of Worship: Follow the trail • Because we were made to worship, we all worship something • “Worship is our response to what we value most” Louie Giglio

  4. The What of Worship: Follow the trail • To find out what we worship, follow the trail… • Time • Money • Energy • Affections

  5. The Who of Worship: The God who is not us “[God] knows the best thing he can give us is himself. So in calling us to prize him above all else, God is both gaining the praise that is rightfully his alone and causing us to gain the greatest treasure we will ever know. God is not an egotist seeking more than he deserves from us. Rather, he is God, choosing, in worship, to reward us with himself.” Louie Giglio

  6. The Who of Worship: The God who is not us • “I am the first and the last; apart from me there is no God” (Isaiah 44:6) • “To whom will you compare me or count me equal?” (Isaiah 46:5) • “I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me” (Isaiah 46:9)

  7. The Who of Worship: The God who is not us Revelation 4:1 - After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.”

  8. The Who of Worship: The God who is not us 2 At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. 3 And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and ruby. A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne.

  9. The Who of Worship: The God who is not us 4 Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads. 5 From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder. In front of the throne, seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven spirits of God.

  10. The Who of Worship: The God who is not us 6 Also in front of the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal. In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back. 7 The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle.

  11. The Who of Worship: The God who is not us 8 Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying: “‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,’ who was, and is, and is to come.”

  12. The Who of Worship: The God who is not us 9 Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say:

  13. The Who of Worship: The God who is not us 11 “You are worthy, our Lord and God,    to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things,    and by your will they were created    and have their being.”

  14. The Who of Worship: The God who is not us • God is unpolluted • “Holy, holy, holy…” (Revelation 4:8) • God is unchanging(Hebrews 13:8; James 1:16-17) • God is unlimited • “…is the Lord God Almighty…” (Revelation 4:8)

  15. The Who of Worship: The God who is not us • God is unending • “…Who was, is, and is to come…who lives forever” (Revelation 4:8-9) • God is ungoverned(Revelation 4:9) • “…Who sits on the throne…” (Revelation 4:8-9) • God is uncreated • “…you created all things…” (Revelation 4:11)

  16. The God who is not us: Our response • Where does your trail end? • Does it evidence a life lived in honor of God and decisions made in recognition of him, or is God just an idea in the back of your mind who doesn’t really impact your everyday life? • Do you catch yourself “dumbing down” God? • “God understands how busy I am” • “My sin is no big deal because God loves me and will forgive me”
