  2. Why is this important? “There is evidence that students who lack this facility with number words and numerals struggle as they progress with further arithmetic knowledge. For example, if students do not know the NWS from 305 backwards across 300, how can they make sense of a task such as ten less than 305? Students can and should learn number word sequences and numerals in a number range well in advance of learning to add and subtract in that range.” Developing Number Knowledge, 2012.
