What is Clackamas Web Academy? • CWA is a web-based public charter school serving 440 students grades 1-12. • CWA is accredited by the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools. • CWA serves a diverse population, many of whom choose the school because they need a more individualized, flexible approach.
Hybrid Model • On-line curriculum administered through one-on-one teaching in the home • Combined with classes, supports and experiences on-site and in the community
How it works • CWA is served by 3 “schools”: elementary, middle and high school. • Each student is assigned a faculty member who serves as advisor. • The advisor is available daily by cell phone, text and email, and meets with the student (and usually parent) in the home a minimum of twice per month. • Highly qualified teachers grade work, tutor and conduct enrichment classes in their subject areas. • Each student belongs to a team that include teachers certified in all core areas, a counselor and a senior internship coordinator.

Education Plan & Profile: CWA’s Comprehensive Counseling Each Counselor belongs to a team of teachers and advisors that share students, grades 1-12. Counselors provide academic, social-emotional, and career guidance in concert with Advisors, Teachers and the School to Careers Coordinator.
The Goal … … for Counselors to meet with each student in grades 8-12 and their parent/guardian at least 2x per year to evaluate and update plans and goals.
Early College Options The challenge The solution Meeting the academic needs and providing the means for “high flying” students to achieve their greatest potential is a difficult proposition in any school that is made up of a diverse population. A creative partnership with Clackamas Community College
Four Options • CWA+6: All full-time high school students in good standing may apply to take up to 6 credits per academic year to be paid for by CWA • Dual College Credit: CWA high school classes for which students can also earn Clackamas Community College Credit • Smart Internship: Students earn from 1 to 12 college credits upon completion of their Senior Internship, CWA’s capstone graduation requirement • Early College Option (ECO) Program: Full time enrollment in community college classes for students ready for college level work

Senior Internship meets Essential Skills: • Demonstrate personal management and teamwork skills • Think critically and analytically • Listen actively and speak clearly and coherently Personalization : • Document progress toward personal, career and post-high school goals • Apply and extend knowledge in new and complex situations • Use critical thinking, problem solving and inquiry in real world contexts
Foundational Concepts of YTA Preparation: Students learn about community, identify community needs and problems facing the community, and research organizations that are addressing those needs. Action: Students volunteer in the community Reflection: Students formally reflect and evaluate the project and the process, and clarify their learning through structured activities that emphasize critical thinking skills.
www.youthtakeaction.org The on-line course curriculum includes civics and government lessons such as the rights and responsibilities of being a citizen and how these concepts relate to serving in the community.

What is the New Oregon Diploma Dissemination Grant? ODE awarded CWA a grant to disseminate information to public schools throughout the state as they implement the requirements of the New Oregon Diploma. Through this grant, CWA will share best practices and assist other schools in developing a plan to implement the new requirements.
How can CWA assist your school or district in implementing the New Oregon Diploma? • Join CWA at a design studio in October 2009: CWA will fully fund a team from your school and other schools to travel to CWA to work on best practices in implementing the New Oregon Diploma • Invite CWA to conduct a workshop at your school site to assist in developing a plan to meet the new standards • Watch www.clackamaswebacademy.orgfor a new website, including a page of resources on the New Oregon Diploma
