  2. Past • SURFnet and the institutions organise security campaigns separately • SURFnet’s campaign was ‘one-way’ SURFnet, pioneering network for higher education and research

  3. New approach • In 2008 we decided on a joint approach towards Security Awareness in Higher Education. • A sounding board has been set up which includes security specialists from Higher Education • Coordination at SURFnet • RESULT: Joint campaign Cybersave Yourself

  4. Campaign aim • Educate students and staff on specific security issues • Create overall awareness that will change the way they think and ultimately the way they act • Flexible campaign that fits the needs and demands of all institutions SURFnet, pioneering network for higher education and research

  5. Campaign model • Joint toolkit/library with promotion materials • Flexible: possible of inserting your own logo or details in materials • Local: launching a local campaign at any time with the appropriate materials • Extensible: new themes and materials will be added regularly • One website www.cybersaveyourself.nl with general information and tips & tricks • Creating joint “campaign moments” SURFnet, pioneering network for higher education and research

Activities in 2009 • Q1: Launching campaign with 18 institutions • Cybercrime and promotional materials • website www.cybersaveyourself.nl • Q2: Online survey • Q3: movie contest for students • Q3: Kate movie • Q4: Debate in collaboration with institution Other - adding new materials to the toolkit (also in English) - joint purchase of usb sticks, pens and boomerang postcards (6 institutions) - collaboration with GOVcert and Postbus51 SURFnet, pioneering network for higher education and research

  9. Result In total 34 institutions took part in the CSY campaign in 2009 (to our knowledge) SURFnet, pioneering network for higher education and research

Plans 2010 • Q1: Battle of Concepts for students • Q1: Materials in toolkit with new subjects: phishing, social media, confidential information and mobile computing • Q2: Online survey (baseline and progress measurement) • Q3: National campaign for students and staff • Use results of the Battle of Concepts • For staff we are considering the deployment of an e-learning tool • Q4: Debate/discussion at Education Days 2010 SURFnet, pioneering network for higher education and research

  11. Discussion topics • Every NREN should have security campaigns • NREN’s who already have security campaigns could work together • A toolkit like this could help the TF-CPR
