After their defeat of Russia, Germany redirected troops to the Western Front, inching closer to Paris by 1918. However, the arrival of American forces triggered a retreat. By November 11, 1918, Germany agreed to an armistice, facing blame for the war's devastation. Millions perished, economies shattered. The French pushed for reparations, leading to the contentious Treaty of Versailles, where new nations emerged, and wartime promises were neglected. With flaws in the agreement, the U.S. hesitated to support the League of Nations, opting for a separate peace with Germany.
