Introduction / Agenda • Welcome to Diablo Valley College • Quick Introduction to Library Resources • Library get place to study and get books, (ebooks), as well as magazines, journals and other media: DVD’s, CD’s and more • Virtual library is open 24/7 with fabulous resources: our databases and research guides

  4. Guided Search • DVC library homepage: • http://www.dvc.edu/org/departments/library/databases.htm • Great suggestions for starting a search • Freely accessible in the library • Remote access with last name and student id number

  6. Encyclopedia Britannica • (Academic Edition) via DVC Library • Good start for searching on a number of topics • Basic Search is powerful • Relevant articles appear in the body of the page • Right sidebar has a short synopsis of the highlighted article

  7. Basic Search for demonstration purposes: • Innovative Photographer: Felix Nadir (Nadar) • Nadir Shah is the wrong person / results are off topic • Spelling is important • Learn a little about your subject prior to searching

  10. Search results • Many options are available • Email to yourself or someone else • Share with Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, or Delicious • More options; Google or Yahoo bookmarks, Reddit, Stumble Upon or Digg • Print out or save article to your workspace

  12. Search results – part 2 • Additional options: • Copy the Bookmark URL, paste into another document • Source citation: very important! • Spelling is important: Library databases (and catalogs) can be very persnickety

  13. Searching tips: • Learn a LITTLE with a basic web search (Google, Yahoo, Wikipedia). This really helps with spelling issues • Use scholarly sources to locate valid, verified information • Internet Public Library http://www.ipl.org/ • Infomine (UCR) http://infomine.ucr.edu/ • Two good web-based sources for valid information (from librarians)

Retrieved from http://0-www.britannica.com.alice.dvc.edu/EBchecked/topic/19796/Native-American-literature • Fujiwara Family: • Good results • 4 page overview, with many references, links to other articles in the Encyclopedia Britannica and suggestions for additional reading on the history of Japan • Took quite awhile to load results

  15. Additional searches, Part 2 • Julienne: Emperor of the Byzantines • Check spelling if possible • Results of the search on Julienne: salad • Searched on Byzantine Emperor and found Justianian I, Emperor of Byzantium • Clues about results are important

Tips and Tricks: • Remote Access Problems: • Try re-entering your name and id number • Clear the browsing history and cache (under Internet options in IE) • Check with your systems administer regarding firewall / security settings • Do your search in the library if remote access is not working for you

Tips and Tricks: Part 2 • Searching suggestions • Try different keywords • Know a little about what you want to find- to help get on the right track • Don’t give up too soon – ping the librarian! • A librarian is on duty: Monday – Thursday: 8 am – 9 pm • Friday: 8 am – 1 pm & Saturday: 12 noon – 4 pm • Don’t remain stuck: come in and we will help
