  1. PRESENTS Changchun, China

  2. Who are we? • The Centre de Physique du Globe is part of RMI (Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium) • RMI is a public federal institute, allowed to make some commercial activity • Inside the Centre de Physique, 3 sections: • Geomagnetic Observations & Instruments • Paleomagnetism & Environmental Magnetism • Ionospheric profiles

  3. : The Project’s Philosophy • Magnetic Valley is a project funded by the Belgian Federal government, aiming to develop socio-economic activities locally, based on Centre de Physique du Globe’s expertise. • Magnetic Valley project started in 2009 • Dedicated web site: www.magneticvalley.be

  4. Heavy Metal Soil Pollution Mapping Geomagnetic Instrumentation Education EDUCATION Airport Geomagnetic Services Galileo applications

  5. Geomagnetic Instrumentation • AutoDIF: • Finalizing development of AutoDIF 2nd generation, based on experience gained from 1st AutoDIF (sold & installed in 2009) • Looking for a location (long term automated run) • Newsletter to inform you • Other instruments: • Improving production facilities for our established instruments (Lama, FLM2/A,…) • Designing new instruments

  6. Airport Geomagnetic Services • For more than 20 years, we provide services to local airports (Compass Rose certification, runway azimuth orientation, supply of data) • We currently investigate the current & future needs of the airport industry regarding geomagnetic services

  7. Heavy Metal Soil Pollution Mapping • Soil pollution is an increasing concern • Magnetic susceptibility measurements offer complementarity to usual geochemical measurements • This method is currently developed through a partnership with universities & the Walloon region (Pollusol project)

  8. Ionospheric profiles: Galileo Applications • The ionosphere plays an important role in wave propagation • Modern society relies more and more on wave propagation (ground to ground, ground to space, GNSS) • Products & services recently developped, available on: http://swans.meteo.be K index nowcast & K index (hybrid) forecast

  9. Education: part of our public mission • Challenge? Make science attractive, addressing the largest public (~16 yrs) in a time efficient way • Ideas & Achievements: • Movie diffusion (« Magnetic Storm » during 1 yr, schools & free entrance public areas) • Cooperation with local cultural centre: exhibition in Dourbes « from Earth to the Universe » (Astronomy) Oct. 2010 • Group visits (limited interest) • Any idea or recommandation is welcome!

  10. CONCLUSIONS • Magnetic Valley is a young and promising project • Different topics, at different levels of completion • We want to keep you informed: • www.magneticvalley.be • Newsletter for geomagnetic instrumentation Thank you!
