I will be able to describe the functions of Windows 2012 on a corporate network • I will be able to describe the various deployment strategies for Windows 2012 • I will be able to use ImageX and the Windows AIK to Image a workstation Learning Goal
OEM Contracts • Updated security in AD CS • Bit locker Administration • Upgraded cloud computing functions • ISA Server integrated as standard firewall • Latest and “greatest” Why 2012?
Metro Interface • More PowerShell Integration • Active Directory Integration with ADFS • IE10 • Windows Firewall – Extensive Changes What has changed
Active Directory Core • DNS/DHCP Services • Windows Role Management • PowerShell Scripting Language What hasn’t changed….much
Foundation & Essentials – Stripped down versions of the OS for small inexpensive servers • Standard – Mirrors 2008 R2 Standard Edition • Datacenter – Mirrors 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition Major Version Differences
Know your nemesis • Before deploying a server understand what is being accomplished • Will this be a database system, a web front end, or a back end processing machine • Will this machine be expected to manage windows workstations and users? Standard Server Theory
Windows Operating System Management • Windows User management • Microsoft Exchange • iOS and Blackberry • Stable Server OS • Raw Processing Power • Extreme Customization What’s better?
Linux – Database, Critical Data, Oracle, Enterprise Applications, IT Specific, Web Servers • Windows – AD, Exchange, Windows Desktop Management, ASP Applications Standard Server Theory
Windows Server Components are separate applications for the OS itself • You must install OS roles based on what your server is going to do • Not all services or roles are required on every service – Example – A domain controller doesn’t always need IIS • Pick the roles based on what your specific server is going to be doing Roles
Features are individual components of roles but are not always required for the roles themselves • For example – Microsoft IIS includes an FTP Server which may be installed, but is not required for IIS to run Features
It is usually preferable to segment or split servers into specific roles. • This allows you to isolate traffic and applications and prevent single point of failure • With the prevalence of VMware and Hyper-V this becomes even easier • …buy RAM Server Segmentation
Server Media • Licence Key • Feature / Role Summary • Static IP Address plan • Server Name Pre-launch checklist
USB • ISO • DVD • Image Physical Media Install
Windows Server 2012 Install Mirrors that of installing the Windows 8 Operating System • Install has not changed much since Windows 7 • Important to remember – not all flavours of the OS have a GUI Installing the OS
Install basic roles for Windows 2012 – Not AD • Assign static IP • Rename server – get creative • Install security updates • Basic Workstation Hardening – Lockdown unused local accounts, disable unneeded services Post Launch
Many organizations use customized images to deploy servers quickly • These can be virtual templates used with vSphere or true images of a template • Used to establish a secure baseline for all servers to be deployed in an enterprise • Security from the ground up Imaging
