Purpose of Reading Relays • Challenge students to read a variety of literature. • Build teamwork and responsibility with peers • Continue to develop good sportsmanship • Encourage students to develop and continue their love for reading
What Is It? • An optional reading competition for fifth grade students. • Students will read “Reading Relay Books” and form a team to compete in the district competition in the spring.
When Is It? • Saturday, April 5, 2014, at Westwood Elementary • Competition begins at 9:15 and usually ends by 12:30 • Parents and friends are welcome to attend • Prizes are awarded to the top 3 teams
So You Want to Participate...Now What? • Step 1: Form a Team • Teams can be mixed across classrooms, but must be in the same building. • Step 2: Think of a Team Name • Step 3: Divide up the List • The students will divide up the reading list of 24 books among their team and start reading! • Step 4: Practice, Practice, Practice • Step 5: On April 6 participate in the competition at Westwood
Team Information • Each school will be able to send five teams to the competition. • If there are more then five teams that form, individual schools will hold a preliminary round to determine which five teams will compete at the district level. • Teams competing at the district level will be determined by February 1st.
What happens on the day of the competition? • Questions will alternate between two teams competing in a round. • All questions will require the complete, correct title of a book from the reading list as the answer. * Example Question: In what book does Louis decide to find Sam so he can go to school with him? * Example Question: In what book does Louis decide to find Sam so he can go to school with him?
What happens on the day of the competition? • If you get it right you get 5 points, then you will be allowed 10 seconds to give the author’s last name. If you get it right you get 3 more points. • If a team answers incorrectly the other team will be given 10 seconds to “pick up” the 5 points by giving the correct title
Prizes • All participants will receive a pencil, bookmark, and certificate of participation. • Prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams • The winning team’s school will receive the traveling trophy that is displayed for the year in the media center. Currently the trophy is at Westwood.
