  2. Description of Duties • You have many smaller jobs leading to the main one: finishing a new chapter for the magazine you are being published in every week. • First you need to discuss with your editor what will happen in next week’s chapter. • From there, you take what you discussed and you draw a sketch of the entire chapter called a Name. • You then take that to your editor, who either approves or disapproves it. • If it is approved, you start drawing the chapter. • You will most likely have assistants who draw backgrounds and objects so you really only have to draw characters and instructions for the backgrounds and such. • Some weeks (depending on you manga’s popularity) you will have to draw color pages, which usually are only the first four pages or less of that chapter. Joe Swanson

  3. Education/qualifications needed • No education needed! You just have to be good enough. Most manga artists go to an art college to get better though. Joe Swanson

  4. Salary/Other benefits • The salary varies greatly between artists. It depends on several things, including the magazine you are being published in, the popularity of your manga, and any merchandise related to your manga. • Masashi Kishimoto, the author of Naruto, makes anywhere from $100,000 to $200,000 a year. But that’s basically the most popular manga right now. • I’m not quite sure about this one but I think you get a copy of the magazine your being published in free every week. Joe Swanson

  5. Employment Outlook • It is very difficult to get a job in manga writing, but not because there aren’t enough openings. To get published, your manuscript has to get through an editors meeting, and even then it’s possible not to get published. Plus, if you do end up getting published, if your manga is down on the weekly polls, your manga’s out and you have to come up with something else or switch magazines. Joe Swanson
