  2. The status of woman in Islam • Women are spiritual and intellectual equals of men. • Islam has given a woman rights and privileges • “And for women are rights over men similar to those of men over women”(2:228)

  3. Before islam • Before the advent of Islam, the pagan Arabs used to burry their female children • Made women dance naked in the vicinity of the Ka’ba during fairs. • Treated women as mere chattels and objects of sexual pleasure possessing. • No rights or position whatsoever…

  4. Muslim Women • A woman is a completely independent personality in Islam. • She has rights to contract, enterprise, earn, and possess independently. • A woman can pursue her education and become an active member of society. • Even then, She had freedom of expression as much as a man had. She could express her views on legislative matters of public interest. (Aisha) • For the first time women were given the right to have a share in inheritance.

  5. Revolutionary teachings of Qur’an • Men and women as being of the same essence created from a single soul. • “O mankind! Reverence your Guardian-Lord, who created you from a single person, created, of like nature, his mate, and from this pair scattered (like seeds) countless men and women. Reverence Allah, through Whom you demand your mutual rights, and reverence the wombs (that bore you); for Allah ever watches over you.” (4:1) • “Your wives are your garments and you are a garment for them.” (2:187) • Islam denounces prejudice against women and gender based discrimination.

Woman and Original Sin • Does not consider woman to be the product of the devil and seed of evil. • Does not consider man to be her dominating lord. • No debate over whether a woman had a soul or not throughout the history of Islam. • “To whoever, male or female, does good deeds and has faith, We shall give a good life and reward them according to the best of their actions.” (16:97)

  7. Addressing in Qur’an • Uses the expression, ‘believing men and women’ to emphasize the equality of men and women in regard to their respective duties, rights, virtues and merits. • “For Muslim men and women, for believing men and women, for true men and women, for men and women who are patient and constant,… for them Allah prepared forgiveness and great reward.” (33:35)

  8. Prophetic Tradition • The Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) preached kindness toward women. • The Prophet of Islam said, “Women are the twin halves of men.” • “When a man marries, he has completed one half of his religion.” • “The best of you are they who behave best to their wives.” • “The more civil and kind a Muslim is to his wife, the more perfect in faith he is.”

Importance of Motherhood • Women as mother also commends great respect in Islam. • It teaches Muslims to respect their mothers and serve them well. • Abu Hurairah reported a man came to the Prophet (pbuh) and asked: “O Messenger of Allah, who is the person who has the greatest right on me with regards to kindness and attention?” He replied, “Your mother.” “Then who?” He replied, “Your mother.” “Then who?” “Your mother.” “Then who?” He replied, “Your father.”

  10. Muslim Wives • She has perfect liberty to choose her husband. • As a wife, a woman can demand a suitable dowry, which belongs to her alone, from her prospective husband. • She is entitle to complete provision and maintenance by the husband, does not have to work or share any of the family expenses, and can retain whatever she possessed before her marriage. • If she wishes to work, be self supporting, and share the family responsibilities, she is quite free to do so.

  11. Why do women stand behind men during prayers? • A regulation of discipline in prayers, not a classification. • Aim is a complete concentration. The prayers involve specific actions and motions (e.g., standing, bowing, prostrating) • Women come with their babies. (need to breastfeed)

  12. Why do Muslim women have to cover themselves? • Qur’an says Muslim women should not display her charms or expose her physical attractions before strangers. • Modesty and piety.
