  2. Forming an Identity • In Western cultures, many adolescents try out different selves before settling into a consistent and comfortable identity. Having such an identity leads to forming close relationships.

  3. IDENTITY VS. IDENTITY DIFFUSION • Adolescents experiment with different values, beliefs, roles and relationships in order to find an identity that is comfortable • Erik Erikson: main task of adolescence is the search for an identity • No identity formation: confusion, cannot make commitments, and follow others • Identity Crisis: turning part in a person’s development when the teenager examines his/her values and makes changes about life roles

IDENTITY STATUS • James Marcia: 4 categories of identity status • Identity Moratorium: searching for identity; exploring all possible alternatives • Identity Foreclosure: conforming to identity of others • Identity Diffusion: making no commitment; no goals • Identity Achievement: exploring options and then committing to an identity
