Mary Gallert-Fortunate in Her Adoptive Parents

Whether Mary Gallert realizes it or not, her mother’s accepting and giving communication about Mary’s adoption made all the difference in Mary’s mental health and emotional balance. It could have gone in an entirely different way. Mary was encouraged to talk about her adoption from the age of 6, when she had stumbled upon her adoption file in her father’s study.

  1. Mary Gallert Fortunate in Her Adoptive Parents Whether Mary Gallert realizes it or not, her mother’s accepting and giving communication about Mary’s adoption made all the difference in Mary’s mental health and emotional balance. It could have gone in an entirely different way. Mary was encouraged to talk about her adoption from the age of 6, when she had stumbled upon her adoption file in her father’s study.

  2. Mary Gallert Struggles With Growing Feelings of Loss Mary Gallert began to experience feelings of abandonment and rejection by her birthparents, which threatened to persist for a lifetime without the opportunity to confront them and get answers to her questions. Despite the love and support of the adoptive parents, Mary Gallert may always deal with self-blame and wretched feelings of loss should she not search for and know her birthparents.

  3. Mary Gallert’s Feelings Come to Fruition During Adolescence Mary Gallert found that the real emotions and confusion surrounding her adoption did not emerge immediately, but evolved over the years of her adolescence. As Mary grew and learned about herself, so did her anxiety over her developing feelings about her birthparents and her adoption. Feelings of grief and loss toward the relationships which are missing may arise and begin to overwhelm the adoptee.

  4. Mary Gallert Meets Her Birthmother Mary Gallert found that the initial reunion was surprisingly easy. Her birth mother had been taken aback by the investigator’s call, but was tearfully sorry to Mary about her reaction. While realizing that her birthmother was not the movie star she had imagined, Mary was not disappointed to get to know her. She found her birthmother to be intelligent and perceptive, by turns tearful and joyful to learn about her daughter, and anxious to fill in the blanks of the lost years between them. Her birthmother assured her that she had searched for her.
