A switchblade is automatic which means that with a push of the button, the blade immediately pops up with the release of a spring that operates along with the push of the button. As compared to switchblades, spring assisted knives do have a different opening mechanism: by pushing the opening button it is not possible to open the blade immediately. The button is designed to start the opening mechanism of the spring assisted knife which requires the user to fully open the knife with his/her hand.
