  2. Hitler’s Aggression In March of 1936, Adolf Hitler ordered German troops to occupy the Rhineland, a demilitarized zone between Germany and France

  6. The Sudetenland A region in western Czechoslovakia with 3 million ethnic Germans; many desired to be a part of Germany, including KonradHenlein, leader of the pro-Nazi Sudeten German Party

  8. The Czech Response? Czech President Edvard Benes was NOT amenable to the demands made by Henlein, asking for Sudetenland autonomy (independence)

  9. Great Britain & France? They wished to avoid war at all costs, and advised Czech President Benes to give in to the demands of Hitler and Henlein

  10. What next? Negotiations broke down between Hitler and the Czechs; Hitler threatened to invade the Sudetenland; Neville Chamberlain, British Prime Minister asked Hitler for a conference

  11. The Munich Conference September 29 1938 in Munich, Germany; Hitler, Mussolini, Chamberlain of the United Kingdom and Edouard Daladier (France) all met to discuss a solution to the Sudetenland situation

  17. And the Agreement? France and Great Britain agreed to not interfere in Hitler’s taking of the Sudetenland, and allowed Hitler to take the remainder of Czechoslovakia as long as he promised to GO NO FURTHER!

He also said, "Today it is the turn of Czechoslovakia. Tomorrow it will be the turn of Poland and Romania. When Germany has obtained the oil and wheat it needs, she will turn on the West.”
