Economic Influences • The ending of World War I had a major influence on the fashion industry. • Many young women who acted as nurses during the war returned with much greater medical knowledge after seeing all the damaging affects of the war • Out of the war came much medical progress in the field of cosmetic and plastic surgery

  4. Demographic Influences • Fashion was still heavily influenced by the Industrial Revolution

  5. Political Influences • Woodrow Wilson was the President of the U.S. in 1920 • His wife, Ellen Wilson was the first lady

Social Influences • Social life and fashion was greatly improved in the 1920’s. • There were new forms of entertainment including radio, crosswords, jazz, dance, etc. • World War I gave women a sense that they could do anything a man could, including smoking and drinking. • The women who smoked, drunk, and lived a fast-paced reckless life were referred to as flappers.

Designer of the Decade • Jeanne Lanvin began her career in fashion as a milliner making beautiful clothing for her daughter • skillful use of complex trimmings, dazzling embroideries, and beaded decorations in light, clear, floral colors • By 1925 Lanvin produced many different products, including sportswear, furs, lingerie, men's fashion, and interior designs.
