  1. DEFINITION OF AGRITOURISM Bohuslava Boučková AgriTourNet 'S Hertogen Bosch March 2008

  2. Structure • Types of definitions: • alternative/sustainable tourism • rural tourism • agritourism • Basic frame of agritourism • Proposal for the AgriTourNet AgriTourNet 'S Hertogen Bosch March 2008

  3. Types of definitions • Basic difference: agritourism and rural tourism • Mixed definitions • Czech definition AgriTourNet 'S Hertogen Bosch March 2008

  4. Most of the definitions are based on: • difference from mass tourism • stress on individual/small group approach • sustainability • environment and nature protection • traditions • enjoyment, but also education AgriTourNet 'S Hertogen Bosch March 2008

  5. Alternative Tourism The alternative forms of tourism combine tourist products or separate tourist services different from the mass tourism by means of supply, organization and the human resource involved. These are rural, ecotourism, adventure (biking, horseback riding, snowshoeing, ski mountaineering, rafting, diving, caving, climbing), thematic tourism – connected with the cultural and historical heritage, the esoteric, religion, wine, traditional cuisine, ethnography and traditional music and handicrafts. AgriTourNet 'S Hertogen Bosch March 2008

  6. Sustainable tourism Sustainable tourism is a new category and is a continuation of the conception for sustainable development which was launched at the conference in Rio in 1993. It is a result of the concerns to the protection of endangered regions on the planet as a whole and in particular the tropical woods. However, it treats urban and rural regions, cultural and historical heritage as well and consequently has broader coverage than ecotourism. Sustainable tourism’s objective is minimizing tourism influence on the local environment through promoting its conception to tourists before and during their holiday as well as provoking nature conservation practices ever since the conception stage in the outgoing sector. AgriTourNet 'S Hertogen Bosch March 2008

  7. Types of definitions • Basic difference between rural tourism and agritourism Agritourism = Agricultural Tourism It refers to the act of visiting a working farm or any agricultural, horticultural or agribusiness operation for the purpose of enjoyment, education, or active involvement in the activities of the farm or operation. AgriTourNet 'S Hertogen Bosch March 2008

  8. Agritourism in the narrow sense Agritourism is a style of vacation in which hospitality is offeredon farms. This may include the opportunity to assist with farmingtasks during the visit. ….. Agritourism has often been proposed as a means to prop up a localagricultural economy when local producers are no longer economicallycompetitive otherwise. AgriTourNet 'S Hertogen Bosch March 2008

  9. Dude and guest ranches Pumpkin picking Spring planting Camping trips Hunting & Fishing Participate in farm activities Dairies Wildlife watching/photography Wineries Bed & Breakfast Cabin rental Campfires/picnics Wagon rides Meeting facilities Catered events Horseback riding Cattle drives Skeet shooting Nuts/Produce/Meat/ Baked goods for sale Agritourism: wide range of activities AgriTourNet 'S Hertogen Bosch March 2008

  10. Agritourism as a part of sustainable tourism Agritourism is the form of tourism which capitalizes on rural cultureas a tourist attraction. It is similar to ecotourism except that itsprimary appeal is not the natural landscape but a cultural landscape. If the attractions on offer to tourists contribute to improving theincome of the regional population, agritourism can promote regionaldevelopment. To ensure that it also helps to conserve diversity, therural population itself must have recognized agrobiodiversity asvaluable and worthy of protection.” http://www.gtz.de/agrobiodiv/download/agrotourismus_engl.pdf AgriTourNet 'S Hertogen Bosch March 2008

  11. Rural Tourism is a recreational experience involving visits to rural settings or rural environments for the purpose of participating in or experiencing activities, events or attractions not readily available in urbanized areas. 12. Definition of Rural Tourism Any form of tourism that showcases the rural life, art, culture and heritage at rural locations, thereby benefiting the local community economically and socially as well as enabling interaction between the tourists and the locals for a more enriching tourism experience can be termed as rural tourism. Rural tourism is essentially an activity which takes place in the countryside. It is multi-faceted and may entail farm/agricultural tourism, cultural tourism, nature tourism, adventure tourism, and eco-tourism. As against conventional tourism, rural tourismhas certain typical characteristics, like it is experience oriented, the locations are sparsely populated, it is predominantly in natural environment, it meshes with seasonality and local events and is based on preservation of culture, heritage and traditions. In other definitions, howeverrural tourism and agritourism is a synonym Rural tourism involves tourists witnessing or participating in activities that form the core of country life such as farming (synonyms: farm tourism, agrotourism /agritourism). Loosely defined it can encompass any activity that takes place in a non-urban, populated area. With farm incomes dwindling in many "developed", but also "developing" countries, and people migrating to cities or abroad, rural tourism is often seen by planners as a magic wand to stop rural decay • Antonis, Athens, Greece AgriTourNet 'S Hertogen Bosch March 2008
