  2. Look at all these scales!!!

  3. Using Scale On A Map • Please turn to page 6 & 7 • Take a look at the two maps on page 7. • Which map shows the larger area? (The top or bottom map?)

  4. Looks can be deceiving…

  5. What is the scale on a map anyway? A scale tells how many feet or miles each in on the map stands for

  6. Why would we need a scale on a map?? Maps are always drawn smaller than the places they show.  The scale is needed to translate distances on the map to distances in the real world.

  7. Now, it’s your turn to use scale on a map! Page 6 answer questions 1-6 on a sheet of paper. Use a ruler or make your own ruler by taking a sheet of paper and mark the beginning and end of the scale on your paper. Take the line on this paper and line it up as you would a regular ruler!

  10. We’re Almost Done… On a blank sheet of paper, please use your own words to define what a scale is on a map. Use at least one sentence to tell me why we need a scale on a map. Make sure your name is on this sheet of paper!

Using Directions On A Map • Directions on a map are different than the directions we used in our everyday life. • “Yeah, turn left then make a right after that hill and down the brick road you make another left then you’re there!” • Directions like that are not the most accurate and definitely would not be helpful when you’re traveling or trying to locate things on a map.

  13. Vocabulary • North Pole- The most northern point on the Earth • South Pole- The most southern point on the Earth • Cardinal Directions- North, South, East, and West • Intermediate Directions- “In-Between” directions. Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest

  14. Vocabulary Continued • Compass Rose- An arrow that shows the cardinal and intermediate directions. • Continents- The largest bodies of land on Earth • Oceans- The largest bodies of water • Isthmus- A narrow strip of land that connects two larger pieces of land

  15. Let’s get a better look! The top pictures is of the four cardinal directions. North, South, East, West. The bottom picture is a combination of the cardinal and intermediate directions. This makes the compass rose.

  16. How about some practice? Volunteers will come to the board and fill in the correct directions on this compass rose.

  17. Questions 1-10 on page 8 We will do these questions together! Refer to this map or the one in your book on page 9.

  18. Let’s Review… What two guides help people find their way from one part of the Earth to another? What are the four cardinal directions? How are directions displayed on a map? How are directions displayed on a map?

  19. We’re Almost Done… On a blank sheet of paper draw the compass rose. Label the cardinal and intermediate directions.

  21. Using Latitude and Longitude On A Map • Please turn to pages 12-13 • Has anyone ever been on an airplane? Did you ever wonder how the pilot knows where he is going? • The pilot uses these imaginary lines called latitude and longitude to guide him through the skies. These lines are also drawn on our maps

  22. A great way to remember latitude is to think that latitude lines look like the rungs on a ladder. Latitude-ladder sound similar.

  23. A great way to remember the longitude lines is it sounds like loooongitude lines, like long lines.

  24. Questions 1-10 on page 13 These questions will be done as a class.
