  2. What does R.A.R.E. stand for? • Restate • Answer • Reason • Example • These are the four steps that you should follow when answering any question.

  3. Restate • The first step is restating the question. You need to do this for two reasons. • 1. So that the person reading your answer knows what question you are answering • 2. So that you make sure that you are answering properly EX. Q: What is your favorite color? A. My favorite color is purple.

  4. Answer • The second step is giving an answer. EX. Q: What is your favorite color? A: My favorite color is purple.

  5. Reason • The third step is giving a reason. Everyone has a reason for doing everything that they do, just as everyone has a reason for answering in the way that they do. • You cannot pull an answer out of the air. • Ask yourself, “Why do I think this is the answer?” You should get a because … EX. Q. What is your favorite color? A. My favorite color is purple because it is beautiful.

  6. Example • The next step is example. You must be able to back up your answer with specific examples. • These are usually found within the text, so use the author’s words to back up your idea. EX. Q. What is your favorite color? A. My favorite color is purple because it is beautiful like an amethyst stone or lilac flower.

  7. Sample questions(answer using RARE) • What is your favorite month? • Who is your best friend and why? • What is your favorite book? • If you could have any pet (that you do not already own)what would it be and why? • What is your favorite thing to do over summer break?
