  1. Lesson 55 Multiples • Factors Mental Math: Find the change back from a dollar for items with these prices. 26¢ 92¢ 14¢ 76¢ 31¢ Review: f) $4.00 - $0.50 g) 48 + 29 + 210 h) 300 + 260 + 40

  2. If we multiply 4 by the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 . . . we get 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 . . . . These numbers are called multiples of 4. The multiples of 4 are the numbers we say if we count by fours, starting from 4. They are listed on your multiplication table. Example 1: List the first four multiples of 7. Example 2: a) what is the fourth multiple of 6? b) what is the third multiple of 8?

  3. Example 3: 12 is a multiple of which whole numbers? Solution: A multiplication table can help you answer this question. We find 12 at each of these locations on a multiplication table: 1 x 12 or 12 x 1 2 x 6 or 6 x 2 3 x 4 or 4 x 3 Example 4: a) What is the last digit of any multiple of 10? b) What two digits are always the last digit of a multiple of 5?

  4. Factors: In example 3 we found that 12 is a multiple of 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12. Each of these numbers is a factor of 12. On a multiplication table the factors are the numbers that can be multiplied to produce a multiple. Factor x factor = product (product is an answer to a multiplication problem) factor x factor product

  5. Example 5: List the four factors of 6 Solution: 1 x 6 or 6 x 1 2 x 3 or 3 x 2 Factors of 6 are 1, 2, 3, and 6. Example 6: List the factors of 9. Solution: 1 x 9 3 x 3 Factors of 9 are 1, 3, and 9.

  6. Practice set (do these on your note paper) List the first five multiples of 6. List the third, fourth, and fifth multiples of 9. What is the seventh multiple of 8? What five digits appear as the last digit of multiples of 2? Ten is a multiple of which whole numbers? List the factors of 8. Two factors of 18 are 1 and 18. Find four more factors of 18. h) List the factors of 5.
