  2. REVIEW OF STESEG MANDATE • STESEG was created in January 2002 • First meeting held in June 2002 • Objective: The primary objective …… is to improve the quality (including comparability and timeliness) of short-term indicators in priority areas of OECD and Member country need. It will do this through the provision of a forum for exchanging information on current best practice and the preparation of recommendations to the OECD Secretariat and Member country statistical agencies for implementation. • Work topics: The work …… will cover an appropriate balance between specific subject areas of short-term indicators (such as prices, services, business statistics, business tendency survey results, finance, balance of payments, etc) and cross-cutting issues (such as comparability, seasonal adjustment, quality assessment, timeliness, etc).

  3. REVIEW OF STESEG MANDATE • Mandate scheduled to be reviewed in 2004 • Review overtaken by events – with recommendation to be an official body of the OECD Committee on Statistics (together with national accounts expert group) • Nevertheless still worthwhile reviewing what we are doing • What needs to be changed – especially use of task forces?

  4. REVIEW OF STESEG MANDATE Review process • Current discussion • Meeting evaluation forms • Feedback / comments on meeting report (to be sent in mid July)

  5. REVIEW OF STESEG MANDATE Changes in operation in line with other OECD WPs: • Chaired by a Member country delegate • Report to OECD Committee on Statistics • Output to be approved by Committee

  6. REVIEW OF STESEG MANDATE • Changes in operation in line with other OECD WPs (cont.): • More formality in procedures • OECD Delegations determine which national agency attends – need to establish contact • Use of written procedure for ad hoc requests, activities • Documents classified for set period established by Committee • Use of OLISnet for dissemination prior to meeting • Committee approves which non-Member and other I/O to attend
