  1. Unit 2-1 Mole and molar mass

  2. The Mole, the SI unit for amount 1 dozen = 12 parts 1 gross = 144 parts 1 ream = 500 parts 1 mole = 6.02 x 1023 parts ** Happy Mole Day * October 23rd ** A Mole is a Unit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1R7NiIum2TI

  3. Mole jokes • Q: What line from Shakespeare do high school moles have to memorize? • Q: What kind of test do student moles like best? • Q: What did one mole say to the other? • Q: Why did Avogadro stop going to a chiropractor on October 24th? • Q: How many guacs are in a bowl of guacamole? • Q: Why is Avogadro so rich? • A: "To mole or not to mole, this is the question.“ • A: Mole-tiple choice. • A: We make great chemistry together. • A: He was only tense to the 23rd! • A: Avocados number! • A: He's a multi-mole-ionare!

  4. Avogadro’s Number 6.02 x 1023is called “Avogadro’s Number” in honor of the Italian chemist Amadeo Avogadro (1776-1855). I didn’t discover it. Its just named after me! Amadeo Avogadro

  5. Convert between mole and amount of particles • Avogadro’s Number can serve as a conversion factor between mole and actual amount of particals. • There are 12 eggs in a dozen eggs. There are 6.02 x 1023 eggs in a mole of eggs. That’s a lot of eggs!!

  6. Molar Mass • The mass of one mole of a kind of chemical is call the molar mass of that chemical. • There are exactly 12 grams of carbon-12 in one mole of carbon-12. • The molar mass of each element can be found from the periodic table. • Molar mass can serve as a conversion factor between mass and mole amount of a chemical.

  7. Atoms or molecules The conversion relationships 6.02 x 1023 Mole Molar mass Grams

  8. Calculations with Moles: Converting moles to grams How many grams of lithium are in 3.50 moles of lithium? 3.50 mol Li 6.94 g Li 45.1 = g Li 1 mol Li

  9. Calculations with Moles:Converting grams to moles How many moles of lithium are in 18.2 grams of lithium? 18.2 g Li 1 mol Li 2.62 = mol Li 6.94 g Li

  10. Calculations with Moles: converting from mole to amount of particles How many atoms of lithium are in 3.50 moles of lithium? 6.02 x 1023 atoms 3.50 mol = atoms 2.07 x 1024 1 mol

  11. Calculations with Moles:converting from mass to amount of particles of a chemical How many atoms of lithium are in 18.2 g of lithium? 18.2 g Li 6.022 x 1023 atoms Li 1 mol Li 6.94 g Li 1 mol Li (18.2)(6.022 x 1023)/6.94 1.58 x 1024 = atoms Li

  12. Homework • First page of the handout. You have to use periodic table to do this HW. • Due tomorrow
